tonight, tornado flipped over his truck on mount hermon road. this is video of him in 2022. while we don't see that right now giving updates at a local fire, but you can see the force of that tornado right there. jeff joins me now to talk a little bit more. so i've heard you say throughout the day an ef one. tell me a little bit about the power of that and the kind of destruction we're talking 90 mile an hour winds. is that true? that's winds at 90. i mean, just looking at that video, you could see how frightening it would have been. just the way that tornado was rotating and just moving so quickly. and what i wanted to show everybody is the key thing we needed in order for that to happen. whenever you get a tornado, you needd this kind ofa setup or similar setup. we had strong surface winds 50 to 70mph coming out of the west northwest, but we had strong upper level winds at 150 plus miles per hour coming directly out of the west. so that's wind up where the airplanes fly. so both of those powerful winds moving in different directions creates what's known as wind shear. you

this is off of mount hermon road. expected to reopen around nine this morning. but we have a crew there, as you can see, and we will continue to monitor the progress there. the tornado took down massive trees. look at this one. a huge ponderosa pine sending it slamming down onto the roof of scotts valley middle middle school. chainsaw crews worked for hours carving up the tree, removing the trunk. miraculously, no reports of injuries from that. when the tornado hit, power lines were taken out. cars were flipped on their sides, including a cal fire truck. some vehicles were completely picked up and turned upside down. we know at least one person was critically injured. thousands of pg&e customers remain in the dark and the cold. this morning. the green and the orange are seeing and the. and the yellow. upwards of 5000 people without power. 5000 customers without power. this morning. we will continue to monitor the progress as pg&e heads out. today they were monitoring the storm to see when it would be safe for their cr

ronan says he walked out of the safeway on mount hermon road to chaos in the parking lot. to swirl and pick up, and then it grabbed a bunch of those branches and you could just see it come right down through the parking lot. some were injured. we had three people that needed to be transportedo the hospital. i think we had six injuries in total, one person in critical condition. we also had several vehicles damaged, probably approximately 20 vehicles that were damaged in the incent, as well as six that were had to be hauled away. the tornado uprooted this giant ponderosa pine tree, sending it crashing down on scotts valley middle school. using chainsaws. crews worked for hours to carve up the tree and remove the trunk. witnesses say this man was hit in the head with a flying branch as he ran through a parking lot. many businesses were forced to close early because a tornado took out power lines, leaving many in disbelief. a tornado touched down here, but relieved more people weren't hurt. you can see the crews are out here working in bucket trucks. they're going to be out h

and you'll see some of the debris here in one of the shopping centers along mount hermon road. this was one of the areas that was hardest hit. the tornado traveled about 30 yards, so not super far. but we're lucky. i think that it happened mostly in retail parking lots and not directly in neighborhoods. that's some pretty incredible video that we're seeing. kris. i mean, we're seeing debris flying. we've seen the cars toppled over. very scary stuff. but did people get warning that there was the potential for this tornado? so there was a weather warning. in effect, it was not a tornado warning. it was a marine activity warning. the national weather service said th because of the t tornado warning that they issued in san francisco, which bob redell will talk about in just a moment, because that didn't quite materialize, they were hesitant to issue a proper tornado warning for santa cruz county for scotts valley, but that the advice with the marine activity warning would have been the same for people to take cover and get inside. so they felt like they did issue a warning. maybe i

yeah, we're on mount hermon road in scotts valley. this is one of the busiest roads in santa cruz county. and the area impacted by that tornado. stoplights up and down this road only just started working again a couple of hours ago. we're talking two days after the tornado, but thes aftermath isn't just about fixing and repairing the physical damage. it's also about learning lessons and figuring out how to better prepare and warn people for another event like it. crews were still hard at work two days after this tornado swept through this area in scotts valley saturday. all of the damage happening in a short but frightening amount of time. >> the information that we have right now is generally less than five minutes. >> the day of the tornado, the national weather service issued a tornado warning in san francisco. a tornado there never happened, but in scotts valley it was a thunderstorm warning that was issued, not a tornado warning. >> we asked why it can get a little hard to tell with uh- on radar what's going on in the mountains, e

battalion chief manny garcia was driving on mount hermon road on saturday when he noticed the rain startedng heavier by the second. all of a sudden, i see a van in front of me. start moving. start leaning towards the side, and next thing you know, i'm up in the air and just got turned around. not completely turned around, but i got turned the other direction slightly and just got dropped. garcia said he never considered this could be a tornado, but that's exactly what they encountered, and his cal fire truck ended up on its side. his tools and medical kit that were in the back of the truck when the twister hit, they vanished along with the truck's camper shell. he ended up kicking out the front windshield to get out of the flipped vehicle. started helping me, which i want to thank them for helping. and they started taking the windshield in. garcia says he couldn't believe it. he shot this video on his cell phone after calling for help. the first respoer then went into rescue mode, the victim becoming the rescuer. i just wanted help to arrive and start assessing to get a better picture beca

the tornado touched down right near a safeway parking lot on mount hermon road. one former first responder in santa cruz county says he was stunned when he spotted the tornado from his nearby home. >> i could see what i thought was a bunch of birds, but what it was was the debris from the top of the tornado was kind of right over that way. i worked in emergency services for 47 years, have seen floods, fires, all kinds of stuff. never a tornado. that was the first tornado i've ever seen. >> a close call, to be sure. the tornado created some tense moments for many people who were caught off guard by the twister that ripped through the city. >> i was trying to go indoors and i said, i can't get inside right now because i couldn't get across the parking lot. >> i live right off of mount hermon, and i know there was a lot of terrible things that happened. so all in all, a tree on my jeep, my jeep is going to be okay. >> very good outlook there. pga has now restored power to almost everyone who lives and works in the tornado's path. cleaning up the damage is expected t
