new at 11 a late night debate in mountain view. speak, the city council is voting on whether to install automatic license plate readers throughout the city. this is an issue that usually sparks a lot of opinions. nbc's jocelyn moran joins us from downtown mountain view with the very latest jocelyn. yeah, raj city council just got to this item about half an hour ago. if approved, mountain view would be the latest city to install these license plate readers. neighboring cities have already been using these license plate readers, but there are some concerns with this. we spoke to residents around mountain view tonight. they have mixed feelings. some say they're for them. others are skeptical with what law enforcement will use that information for. it is a good idea in the sense of it will improve, you know, detection and probably tracing. but at the same time a little hesitant. i mean, you know, it'll get used for all kinds of small things like, you know, you're living in your residential area, you take a left turn when there's nobody

very serious crash steve in palo alto mountain view right on the line there.undary northbound 101 in san antonio. all lanes closed. a big rig involved in this crash. this is a deadly crash that happened just before three in the morning. it's been there now for about an hour and a half, and all the lanes are closed northbound 101 at san antonio. they're not letting you get on the freeway. there so if you get on the freeway north of, let's say, embarcadero, you'll be fine. or if you're driving up the peninsula, use 280 instead. they cleared a crash on the bay bridge and all the backup now should be gone from san francisco to oakland. and if you're driving over from oakland to san francisco, absolutely no issues on the bay bridge heading west. it's 430. let's get back to the headlines right now. >> thank you. well the popular hotel in downtown san jose is temporarily closing just as the summer travel season is beginning. hotel de anza says it's doing this because of maintenance problems. ktvu south bay reporter lamonica peters talked to people who had to find som

here and 2 other rail crossings, one in palo alto, one, another in mountain view. but that funding was recently pulled from next year's proposed budget. this is a massive problem. we have a chance to fix it. let's not miss that window. state senator josh becker who represents the area is leading the charge to try to get that funding reinstated because that's going to leverage hundreds of million dollars to both federal funds county and local funds. so this is all ready to go. we're ready to break ground next year, but we need the 70 million with the thought of losing funding. it really does put in jeopardy our ability to get the project done. caltrain executive director michele bouchard says the transit agency supports the proposed safety improvements were operating an all-time high level of train our ridership is coming back. and so we really do need to be able to provide the level of service that the community needs. it's unclear why the funding was pulled from the budget or if governor newsom supports putting it back in. >> the state legislature has about 2 week

mountain view is the latest city in the bay area to approve license plate readers. council members voted unanimously late last night after a long hearing. they say the license plate readers are going to be used to assist in crimes, including hit and runs, amber alerts and car and package thefts. some people are concerned about the added surveillance, while others believe the time has come. police plan to use 24 cameras across mountain view, which will capture license plate images and compare that information with the national crime database. a heads up for bart riders this weekend. a portion of the san francisco line will be shut down between the 24th street station and daly city. crews will be replacing aging rail and installing new lighting. the green line service will be canceled, and there will be no red line service from millbrae to daly city. bart says there will be a free bus service between those stations. all right, let's turn things over to our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. we are approaching friday adjacent. yeah, we are getting close to that weekend
