crawling over the mountains as you go into the local san bernardino mountains and you get toward big we'll have a much better picture of police activity and what is going on. right now, the report and scanner traffic telling us this shootout is under way. that it does involve the man they have been looking now for nine days, christopher dorner, who shot and killed a young couple, shot and wounded two police officers, shot and killed another police officer. this shootout is on. >> neil: we're also getting word that all schools, hospitals and public buildings in and around the area. from five to seven miles are in lockdown. this immediate area that dorner is supposedly holed up in is a collection of rental homes. again, the big bear area. and to trace's point they have already recovered a rifle, possibly a can of gas. the car that he had belonged to the people who he had held hostage earlier. he is without a vehicle of any sort and we don't know how much weaponry we he has with him and obviously enough to keep police at bay? >> i understand the shooting has been going on. we don't know

obviously there's been a lot of tension up in the mountains. just the uncertainty of not knowing where this guy was this whole time. so what's happened today is right below bear mountain resort apparently there was a break-in and a couple was tied up and their car was stolen, and the chase went down highway 38 which is about 20 miles where they are right now, about 20 miles outside of big bear. so they've actually left the valley of big bear, and what caltrans is telling us right now due to this swatituation that a roads into the mountain are going to be closed. they're telling us right now that the skiers that are up here need to find a place to relax for a while at least and the commuters that would normally be coming up the mountain, they are not going to be able to come up for a while. so until further notice, we're -- everybody has got to stay put. >> and, chris, our viewers are watching one of those road blocks right now. we've actually seen armored vehicles being towed up there on trailers up into the mountains. it looks like police are

the search for christopher dorner has ultimately narrowed to the snowy mountains around bear mountain ski resort. this is about 80 miles east of l.a. the same vicinity where his burned out truck was found. also new overnight, another vehicle linked to him was found overnight in san diego. so officials are fingerprinting that vehicle looking for a match to dorner. as for the los angeles police department specifically, it's important to note that although dorner's 11-page manifesto names 40 officers from the force who he plans to target. officials say at this point the entire department which makes pup 10,000 officers is considered a target so lapd is beefing up its security in and around its headquarters in downtown l.a. and also around individual officers. this is a fluid situation this morning as it has been since the story broke. i'm staying on the story. i'll keep you updated throughout the morning. laura and jon? >> thank you very much. we'll of course cover the manhunt all morning long as marla mentioned and bring you the latest details as they unfold. coming up at 5:00, a case o

the sun comes up and it looks like snow across our mountains. it should be interesting this morning as we have some cold temperatures in place and showers beginning to sag a little bit further to the south right now. you can see it on our high-def doppler radar. some of that moisture really south of the golden gate bridge and becoming more widely scattered and i think that will be the case throughout the morning. still, you can see some pockets of moderate amounts of rainfall. you can see that along the 580 near dublin seeing good rainfall there maybe some more snow across the mountains too. snow level down to about 2500 feet. look at that. you can see all that cold air and low, you get an idea of the circulation as the system sags to the south. once it moves by the low will drag the moisture with it. we'll dry out in the afternoon. the temperatures very chilly in spots. 33 degrees right now in santa rosa. 35 in the napa valley. 42 degrees in san jose. and 44 in san francisco. i think throughout the day today we'll start to see some clearing ski
