scott budman is at nasa in mountainview for us this evening. this kepler telescope is a big deal. what's happening with it? >> yeah, it really is. kepler, as of tonight is stable, but there are still a lot of questions to be looked into. the famous planet hunting telescope, which you may remember launched originally back in 2009 went into what nasa called emergency mode late thursday night forcing its to burn more of its fuel than engineers hoped. those working here at nasa ames in mountainview are trying to figure out what happened even as kepler righted itself earlier today. >> first, we have to get control of the whole spacecraft, get everything back online, reboot everything. understand what caused it to go to emergency mode in the first place, then we'll start thinking about when we'll get back to collecting science. >> kepler is given credit for discovering nearly 5,000 planets. it operates about 75 million miles away from earth. by the way, emergency mode puts the spacecraft in sort of a hibernation where it conserves fuel to protect and save its engines. reporting live in
