today montanans will mourn the loss of tara bowman. our thoughts and prayers go out for her friends and her family and all who knew her. i never met tara, but i understand that she was a very special woman. she was a talented artist and a mentor to other artists in bozeman. tara liked to paint in the quiet morning. she had come into work early at the montana trails art gallery the morning of the blast. her family and many friends around bozeman miss her dearly. today as we mourn, we also remember the actions of the people of bozeman after the blast. oftentimes, in the routine of everyday life, we forget that we may be called upon at any moment to act heroically. there were many heroes that day in bozeman. more than 70 firefighters and departments throughout the county answered the call for help. although it took hours to shut off the natural gas that caused the initial blast, the volunteers continued to fight the blaze. many had left their day jobs to perform their duties. the calls for help continued long after the blaze was extinguis

while george's family and friends are still in mourning, we would like to take this opportunity to share some of our memories in celebration of the life of a man who was really one of rhode island's legends. representative george peneches was many things: a husband, a father, a grandfather, a veteran, a public servant, an advocate, a loyal and active member of rhode island's greek community, a successful businessman, and to so many of us, a trusted friend. though george was small in physical stature, he will always be remembered as big, big, big in personality, heart, influence and accomplishments. born in the city of pawtucket, representative peneches was a life long resident of the state of rhode island. a decorated veteran of world wor ii, george served as a tail gunner completing 50 missions over europe at a time when not many men survived 50 missions. he received the air medal with four oak leaf clusters, three battle stars for service in the european theater, the presidential union citation with oak leaf cluster and a personal citation from the commanding general of the 15th air fo

and so we gather today to mourn the loss of a friend, a dear friend and celebrate the life of a person who was a great legislator, a courageous soldier and a public servant to the end. a couple of weeks ago, a couple of planes holding members of congress, family and staff went to johnstown to pay our respects to jack murtha. we went there to console and we were consoled. we saw the tremendous outpouring of love and respect for jack murtha. thousands of people stood in the snow in line to wait their turn to say goodbye. again, members of the president's cabinet came to the service, and the president of the united states, william jefferson clinton, was there. i hope it was a comfort to the family that so many people at every level of our society appreciated jack's contribution, mourn your loss and are praying for you at this sad time. i had the privilege of speaking at jack's service and i told the people at johnstown about the pennsylvania corner. important to note there were no other named locations in the house chamber. pennsylvania corner was a place where jack held court. he was fla
