tonight we had gathered here as a community to mourn the tragic and senseless loss.re to try in a small way to bring comfort to those whose lives had been forever changed by an act so heinous that it is simply impossible to comprehend. no one who lives here was untouched by the events of last saturday. over the past few days, i have repeatedly heard people ask, "how could such a thing have happened and how could it have happened here, in our town, and to people so loved and so it mired?" one of the characteristics that has struck me about tucson, of vast metropolitan area of 1 million people, it can function so much like a small college town. karen brown reports tucson where the community is mourning tonight. >> reporter: we are learning more and more about the suspect. in fact friends from high school said he did have contact with giffords just a few years ago at a community college he was attending. they say he threw out an anti government question to her and then wasn't happy with her response. meanwhile here at the hospital the candles still flicker in support of the victims. the city of tucson is in mourning with businesses flying their flags at half staff to remember the victims. representative gabreille gifford maid have been among the dead if not for the thinking of her intern daniel hernandez. >> i tried to get her up, then i made sure i put pressure on the wound to try to stop the flow of blood. >> reporter: giffords on a vent and has responded to doctors. >> brain swelling could take a turn for the worse but i'm cautionously optimistic. >> reporter: the suspect faces five federal charges including attempted assassination of a congress person and two counts of first degree murder. he is in fbi custody and could f
