they continue to mourn the loss of the 15-year veteran.nly here at the police department that they're remembering the slain officer but it was last night at a vigil that was held outside of city hall. hundreds of people showed up to show their support for the lunger family and for the hayward police department remembering the sergeant that was slain. just a little over 24 hours ago not far from city hall and not far from the police department itself. and remembering the sergeant, many of them were very emotional. >> scott lunger was a friend of mine. and his sister. we went to school together. i felt like i needed to be here. i wish this community would just come together for him. i don't understand why people have to do this act of violence. he was just doing his job. my heart goes out to the family. it's not like i needed to be here. -- i felt like i needed to be here. >> reporter: and flags continue to fly at half staff around not only hayward but also around the entire bay area as they remember sergeant scott lunger. and as i said earl

and the mourning is not just here in the bay area but we heard from congressman eric swalwell who will be the first speaker at this memorial service. he memorialized sergeant lung oren the house floor earlier this week. brought up his picture and talked about the fact that he had conversations with fellow members of the department and one particular lieutenant who described scott lunger as quote, the best cop and best crime fighter i have ever seen. and that was done in front of our federal government. which is a profound respect for law enforcement and that was shared coast to coast in this case, from washington to the bay area. >> very much so. in fact california governor jerry brown will be attending today's service as well. take a look at these pictures we're showing you right thousand. these are flowers that the community has placed outside of the hayward police department in the days following sergeant lunger's death. and i mean it just shows, there's notes, there's cards, there were even some superheroes out there as well. just kind of showing, you know what an impact this one p
