the senseless killings have sparked protests across what is now a very raw mournful and some ways exhausted nation. in atlanta, 10,000 took to the streets at one point blocking a freeway and in rochester new york, 74 protesters were arrested. president obama who is abroad at the nato summit in europe addressed the violence and tension per vading the country today. here are his comments, they came a short time ago. >> i want to begin this press conference with events back home. this has been a tough week first and foremost for families killed and for the entire american family. in my call yesterday to attorney general loretta lynch, i stressed that the justice department and our federal government should continue to do everything we can to assist the investigation in dallas and to support the police and the city of dallas as they deal with this tragedy. in my call to chief brown, i commended him for outstanding leadership during an extremely challenging time and asked him to convey to all of the officers and families how the american people are grieving with them and that we stand with them.

the city mourns the five officers killed in last week's ambush it was a weekend full of memorials, vigils and prayers as the city tries to find a way to move forward after a horrific week. the gunman had planned for an even larger attack. investigators are calling last week's ambush a crime of opportunity. >> reporter: it's been four days since the ambush assassination of police officers here and as you can see, dallas is not back to normal, especially the streets in downtown dallas that have yellow tape all around them. police are still processing the crime scene. we're learning more about the gunman who was removed from the army. he was planning a larger attack and in fact had been detonating explosive devices in preparation for it but fast tracked the attack because of the events of last week. he was stockpiling weapons for years and the chief says he made light of the situation as negotiators were trying to get him to surrender. >> he basically lied, laughing at us, singing, asking how many did he get and he wanted to kill some more. >> the police and the community are trying to get r

we are heartbroken. >> pelley: the entire nation is mourning. on the president's orders, the flag at the white house lies at half-staff. mr. obama interrupted a nato summit today in poland to say this about the violence back home. >> i believe i speak for every single american when i say that we are horrified over these events and that we stand united with the people and the police department in dallas. >> pelley: here is what we know about the five officers who died. senior corporal lorne ahrens was e 48-year-old father and the husband of a dallas police detective. arrgeant michael smith was known as a cops' cop, a married father of two teenagers. brent thompson was a 43-year-old marine corps vet, a transit officer who had just married another officer two weeks ago. officer michael krol was 40 fulfilling a life-long dream to be a cop, and 32-year-old patrick zamarripa was a navy veteran of iraq and a weapons' expert. he leaves a wife and a daughter two years old. is spoke today with his father, rick zamarripa. >> i would always text him when so
