and i had had a debut with the-- with the symphony orchestra playing mozart at 13, but by the time i was 14, i had heard things like, um, ♪ 'twas in the merry month of may ♪ ♪ when the green birds were swellin'. ♪ ♪ a young man on his deathbed lay ♪ ♪ for the love of barbara allen. ♪ and you know, i think mozart and debussy paled in comparison, because i fell in love with folk music, and i never looked back. and i had this national guitar from the rental joint, and it cost--i don't know what it cost-- like $7 a week or something. and it came with jazz lessons. and so i went to the jazz lessons once, and then i abandoned the jazz lessons and concentrated on learning to finger and learning to play the bluetail fly and other songs. and then, of course, graduated to this land is your land and the songs of woody guthrie and the songs of what was becoming what my brother calls "the folk scare." and i loved the songs, and i loved the literature in the music. it was so appealing to me. what timing for a young woman who had a-- a social heart, who had a great voice, who had a national guitar,

and we're doing an evening which is going to be-- both with me and my company-- mozart, late-- string35, one of the most celestial pieces of music ever written, followed by a piece by a living european composer, gyorgy kurtag. if you can imagine a full movement 17 seconds long. and then there's-- there might be 11 of them, and the whole thing is only 9 minutes long. very, very exciting, very acerbic, very aphoristic, very exciting. and then shostakovich: a piece from, i think, 1932, entitled prelude and scherzo-- two short movements, an octet. and a company favorite. a company favorite, which is d-man in the waters to mendelssohn's octet in e-flat major. these are, at this time, formal works about the style that we are developing. janet wong, my rehearsal director-- we spend hours talking about the way arms move, the way the hips move. the company is still quite diverse. i'm hoping that watching all those arms and hips and different uses of phrasing and intention-- that we'll still be able to say something about the big questions we've been trying to talk about today, and that it'll h

it's one of my favorites, but i'm also a huge mozart fan.don giovanni, i think, is one of the great creations of the world. i've -- in my singing when i was trying to sing, i was a cara torre bass and so i sang an awful lot of bach. bach was just an unbelievable genius, and his music is so glorious. but i also love jazz music and i did a big project with dizzy gillespie at alvin ailey that was one of the great projects of my life. so i'm a jazz fan. it's really hard for me to narrow it down. i'm so happy i don't have to in my life. i've got to see so much. >> what about ballet? >> goodness, well, you know, one of the interesting things about ballet is that as ballet dancers have started to cross borders, ballet companies now look more and more alike. there used to be a russian style, a french style, an english style -- that doesn't exist anymore. i love the two young dancers of the bolshoi ballet, osipova and vasiliev, who are now, i think, about 20 years old. they're just astonishingly good and we're lucky to have them here every year at th
