mrs. bush and governor bush and jeb, whose life is passing before his eyes in the florida vote count and president bush on the phone in the background, but this was about ten minutes before al gore took back his concession which i just wish i would have heard that phone call but i didn't, so we've read about it, and the obamas. this is inaugural night. i did the official -- produced the official inaugural book for the committee. i also did the two bush books and two clinton books with my team of photographers, and -- and some photos of michelle obama. this is after eight presidential balls. this is also the first ladies will appreciate this. two more balls to go, back stage, and in the elevator. this is a high school prom picture i think, kind of a gallant moment. this is the night of the inaugural. and then six first ladies at the reagan library dedication with pat nixon. i think this was the last public appearance that mrs. nixon made before she died with lady bird, and then at the george bus

mrs. bush was her commencement address at wellesley. aside from all the brouhaha and protests that were stirred up. it was a great success. i'm sure everybody remembers the quote that at the end of your c. life you'll never regret not quh having passed one more test, non winning one more verdict, closing one more deal, but you will regret time not spent with a husband, child or a parent, and i think this is a code that she lived by. there she is with mrs. gorbachev who came with her to the event and gave her own remarks. in the kremlin with mrs. yeltsin on the left. mrs. yeltsin took us through an impromptu tour of the imperial t apartments in the kremlin which were absolutely incredible because they were covered floor to ceiling with these beautifuln religious icons, and i don't think the apartments had ever been open to the public before, so that was a real treat to see. on our first foreign trip we re were -- went to china here at we tiananmen square.tiananme i was still learning my way, ana

if i knock on your door, mrs. bush, you say well, i have questions about farm parity, okay, i'm going to write down on my card if i can't answer it. then i'm going to come back with an answer and i'm going to knock on your door again. and if you give me another question that i can't answer, i'm going to write it down on the card. they had note card systems for voters in upstate new york that were visited five times. i'm not talking robo calls. i'm talking -- respectful one-on-one, what do you care about? and that says to al smith to say to his key aide, we must have fdr on the ballot in '28 because his wife is more well-known mopg the party faithful and upstate voters than anybody in the history of the state. so that -- they understand, you know, what they have to do but they understand why they have to do it and b why it's important in a way that advances their husbands' careers. >> this sense of the -- being in the public, the public person, you know, i -- i was struck in reading about grace coolidge that will rogers

today with the unveiling of the portraits next to me president and mrs. bush will take their place alongside men and women who built this country and those who worked to perfect it. it has been said that no one could ever truly understand what it is like being president until they sit behind the desk and feel the weight and the responsibility for the first time. that is true. after three and a half years in office and much more gray hair i have a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the presidents that came before me including my immediate predecessor president bush. in this job no decision that reaches your desk is easy, no clois you make is without costs. no matter how hard you try you're not going to make everybody happy. i think that's something president bush and i both learned pretty quickly. that's why from time to time those of us who have had the privilege to hold this office find ourselves turning to the only people on earth who know the feeling. we may have our differences politically, but the presidency trance sends those differences. we

the day that mr. bush left office, it was down to $29 billion. so while we want certainty, they also want to know that, are we investing in companies here in america that are actually going to give us an investment and americans on a whole want to know, are we going to have our wages increased, which they haven't done over 10 years? so the president understands very well, it isn't just about giving corporations tax cuts because small businesses in which private venture capitals like to invest are the ones that create it. this president has cut taxes, contrary to what matt has said, rather than increase taxes. so the debate is, do you want to go back to the days where mr. bush did some good thing, but he handed us a terrible recession -- and move. >> the taxes -- the tacks that president obama cut were the extension of the bush tax cuts. so you can't have it both ways. he essentially took the bush tax cuts and extended them. then, when the economy looked like it was coming out of this deep and terrible recession, he tried to pass cap and trade, a
