mr. zimmerman has pleaded not guilty saying he shot martin in self-defense. nbc's kerry sanders is live in sanford, florida. kerry, what have you seen so far in court today? >> reporter: it is an indication of how things are going to move, very u dishjudiciously and very slowly. george zimmerman aprifd in court today wearing a bulletproof wife along with his wife. prospective jurors are downstairs in another area of the courthouse. it will be staggered over the week. 500 have been summoned. they've started to give questionnaires to the jurors. they'll thumb through those questionnaires and write out answers. then the questionnaires are brought and they have already done this, over to the clerk's office. they make some copies of them, though questionnaires are then brought into the courtroom for both defense attorneys and prosecuting attorneys to go through them, sort them out and see what answers are there. this is a process of picking which six jurors will sit on the jury and decide guilt or innocence here. as you know, george zimmerman has said that he is not guilty, t

mr. zimmerman has pleaded not guilty saying that he shot martin in self-defense. nbc's kerrylorida. i cannot imagine that anyone down there hadn't heard of the case. what is the threshold, kerry, for being permitted on the jury having heard of the case but not having a prior opinion? how do they do that voir dire? >> reporter: exactly. they have questionnaires that they've given to the prospective jurors. the first 100 were called in. there is a total group of 500. if they need more, they can summon more people to the courthouse. but that is one of the questions on the form -- have you formed an opinion on this. the second follow-up question is, can you you accept in the courtroom what is presented to form your opinion or are you already held to the opinion? the judge has made it very clear that she does not want to see a member of this six-member jury to be somebody who has formed an opinion based on what they've heard on television, read on the internet, seen in the newspaper or just heard in conversation, because of course this was locally a very big story and a very big t

mr. markey? >> i think secretary of state john kerry is doing a very good job over there.uilding a coalition towards the goal of isolating iran, isolating others who might be allies of syria. but at the same time, we have to be careful. we've learned this lesson in afghanistan where we gave weapons to one faction, they wound up actually coming back to haunt us. so selecting just the right groups that we would be helping, that's important because we cannot make a mistake. because the most important thing in any action we take in syria is not how we get in, but whether or not at the end of the process we actually have a peaceful syria, that we don't have a civil war break out with multiple factions all going at each other's throats. and so each action has to be carefully calibrated to elicit a specific response. so material aid going in? yes. but to the extent that we're sending in military aid, we just have to make sure that it is not going to come back and bite us as the law of unintended consequences comes back to hurt us as it has in many other regions of the world. >> o
