mr. santorum going from 5% to 16% in less than a month. again, some caution is warranted here. t of all, this is rick santorum. most famous for being ungoogleable for something he once said about having sex with dogs and for losing his own senate seat in a landslide. caution is warranted here. caution also warranted because as i mentioned the other poll out today, taken more recently, the ppp poll. look at rick santorum's numbers in the other poll, they(siow no movement whatsoever in rick santorum's numbers. so caution. if you are rick santorum, this kind of surge in one poll at this late stage in the political calendar, has got to be very excited. what better timing for the emergence of the rick santorum super pac? it's called the red, white and blue fund. today they launched this pro-rick santorum ad in iowa. apparently they're spending a quarter of a million dollars on it. for the other top tier candidates in iowa is a drop in the bucket. for rick santorum, that's a huge deal. i would say next things to watch on rick santorum are probably whether or not any other candidates t

santorum signed this thing. newt gingrich said he wanted to tweak it first. mr. vanderplatts has done it a very good job of making it seem like he matters. like he's the key to winning iowa. fox news calls him a kingmaker. and this kingmaker this year chose rick santorum. so yay, mr. santorum. and oh, yeah, mr. vanderplatts would like some money from rick santorum. the des moines register saying haven't vanderplatts had asked for money in promoting the endorsement said he'd like to have the money to do television advertisements to promote his personal endorsement of santorum and he urges santorum backers to contribute money for that purpose. cnn's christine romans asked mr. vanderplaats about the endorsement for cash thing yesterday. >> it's been reported in the "des moines register" you that had asked him we would like money, maybe a million dollars, to help get out there and advertise our support for you. explain to me that relationship. >> first of all, absolutely not. we would never ask a candidate -- and by the way, when you endorse rick santorum, you probabl

mr. santorum. newt gingrich had problems, questions about ron paul's long-term viability as a nominee are very real. in fact, even in iowa, amongst some of his supporters, folks are concerned that ron paul will not have the capacity to continue to win and stay in first, second or third place in subsequent states after iowa. he's got the money. he's got the base of support. it's a real niche audience in the ron paul wing of the republican party. it's there and it's real. but whether or not it can be sustained in the long haul perhaps not so much. and let's be realistic, there has been a year of dissatisfaction expressed among republicans looking for the conservative alternative to mitt romney. they've looked at four. they've sort of taken a pass on the first four. rick santorum is the fifth. it may well be that he'll get that look. >> eric: and carl, let me just jump in here, even though it's good for romney, he's leading at 25%. for me, i'm a numbers guy, he hasn't really gotten off the 25% mark. t

mr. santorum is drastically out of step. >> that may not bode well in a general election, but at this point has his sites set on winning iowa. and santorum is trailing behind ron paul and mitt romney in iowa, but his poll numbers have tripled in the last month. he is clearly piquing at the right time. >> he certainly is. basically put all of his bets on iowa. thanks very much for that. candy crowley is in des moines right now. she spoke with rick santorum. how did that go, candy? >> it was interesting. obviously, these are great times for him. i congratulated him, he said we've got a long way to go. i pointed out some other numbers in our polling to him because as you know, the closer we get to the caucuses or in the case of new hampshire, to that primary vote, the more voters are saying to themselves, what is the key and critical thing to republicans and that is who can best beat president obama. 41% of likely iowa caucusgoers say mitt romney is the most likely. only 4% say that about rick santorum, so i asked him about that. >> it's because most of the media says that mitt romney's the gu

mr. santorum held court for 15 and 20 minutes and he had a chance to talk to a whole host. endous number of folks left saying i really like rick santorum, but i like michelle bachmann or mitt romney or i like et cetera, et cetera, which speaks to the iowa voters' sophistication and refusal to be cornered or follow polls just because the polls say so. the undecideds and the late decision is what things this thing up and these are astute and sophisticated caucus goers. they know that it's not really a good idea to judge a movie and walk out before it's over and you've read the credits. they'll hang on until they actually go to caucus tuesday night at 7:00 o'clock to make sure they see how it ends and they make a most informed choice possible. rye now it looks like mitt romney and ron paul are fighting for the lead. romney probably has an advantage, but ron paul has a tremendous organization. tomorrow the undecideds and the caucus goers in large, large numbers go to church. there is an estimate of 120,000 people likely to take part in the caucus. half are evangelical christians
