please welcome mr. allen taylor. ♪ >> thank you very much.last winter. when he did, he neglected to mention there would be over 500 submissions in the nonfiction category. i was charmed to hear any young people's literature there were 294. i like to read as much as the next person. but once i blew past 450 books, harold also did not mention what an extraordinary category nonfiction is in its range. memoirs, histories, sociology, philosophy, science, and one work of graphic art. and superb books. i was not fully aware of just how excellent each of these works could be in all of these different categories. so it was not always easy to sort out how we would get down to one book, but i, but i had the help of an extraordinary committee with a wide range a wide range of talents, and we worked hard on this. and so i i want to thank robert auckland. greta low lake. tom reese. lou simmons. and i also i also want to thank harold for his help with our committee. a wonderful job. now, the five finalists for nonfiction from the national book award this ye

. >> a point for mr. allen?>> i don't demure from any of the achievements and congratulate on those achievements but history has delivered a moment where we can take this further in a way that many of us never thought was possible and there are threats now which are highly significant to our democracy. do you feel that a constitutional convention starting to meet before the general election or indeed looking at codeification might be one of the ways in which we can capitalize on the opportunity and oppose some of the very serious risks that i listed? >> i would say to that, first, on codification -- i've never been a great -- look, i think there are arguments. i don't think that will lighten the touch paper of public participation in politics. in terms of conventions what i've said is we should have wider civic engagement on improving governance. i think sometimes when we talk about conventions we forget that we have an organization where the country is divided up into 150 parts and we have free elections and pe

mr. gray, ron allen brought up the anxiety of the process of the grand jury. effective, they need to be secretive. what are you concerned about in the process? are you concerned about the secrecy or that they are not going to indict? >> i'm not concerned they're not going to indict. i'm concerned about the process itself. there seems to have -- like you said before, there's a level of distrust over the process and those that are involved in the process that i think that that's adding a level of anxiety to this whole situation that doesn't have to be necessary had they done things a little bit differently in the beginning. >> do you believe if there's a trial, even if it's a trial that the cop is found innocent, mr. wilson is found -- officer wilson is found innocent, that having the trial itself will be therapeutic for the community? >> i think it may be therapeutic. but you got to understand, chuck, there are people that are locked and loaded into how they feel about this situation. anything short of reaching their full expectation will just never be satisfie

joining us now is allen gomez. mr. gomez, thanks very much for being here. it's nice to have you here. >> thanks for having me. >> if president obama moves forward with action on immigration via an executive order as early as next week, that's the reporting from what the new york times and fox news in the last day or so, what do you think we should expect in terms of scope of his actions? >> well, i believe they think they can go very, very far. and, understand, this is pretty much they're viewing this as an extension from what they did a couple years ago where they protected close to 600,000 young, undocumented immigrants from deportation. and in their view, they're allowed to pick who they're going to focus their immigration enforcementment on. and, so by doing this, so they think what they can do now is extechbd that to one, two, three, four, million people. so long as they don't say we're not going to deport anybody, they think they can protect certain group of the undocumented population. so they've been pushed to prevent -- to stop all of the deportati
