mr. boehner himself said today in a little press -- of a press conference but q&a, a little while ago when he was asked the president come late to the game on this one month extension, and said if there had been a conversation about this ten days or two days ago that we might have had something to talk about. but the fact is that we are forced to move on our own. he's suggesting that if the president headed men slow to move the game on this, that maybe they would have been able to do a one month extension. comment? >> i would simply say that, again, the president and the speaker had a productive and useful conversation to the -- >> he had said if they had it two days ago things might be different. >> i see no reason why we cannot engage as we have been by the way, at the staff level prior to this, -- but does have democrats on the hill, democrats and republicans together in this process going forward. we -- the american people expect us to come together. the president has made very clear in his -- but he also is committed to cutting spending. there's no longer -- there's no debate here abo

mr. boehner made clear in an interview, he does not think people are ready for this right now. our recent poll showed a very small percentage of a -- of americans would support cuts to social security or medicare. it is a very perilous thing for them. many republicans, including paul ryan the house budget committee chairman, have endorsed fairly substantial changes to those programs. for social security, he wants to create private accounts, which would essentially put the risk on individuals more than the government in terms of the benefit of over time. that is something that president bush proposed in 2005 and it did not go anywhere. for medicare, the changes would be arguably even more significant because what mr. ryan has adjusted for that is basically a voucher program. the value of the vouchers would grow more slowly than the cost of medical care has been growing. a lot of seniors would probably have a problem with that. although, that would apply to future seniors, but it would generate a lot of opposition as well a host: realize there is a lot of back-and-forth in all of

mr. boehner appeared to be ready to propose $26 million cuts, on top of $10 billion already signed into law. to make matters even more complicated for boehner, tea party activist have said we think we should put for $9 billion in cuts. mr. forbes, where do you come down on this? >> well, i think the more cuts that you can get, the better. but i think though in terms of where the republican should go on this for now is a focus on the health care bill. as you know, there's $105 billion amazingly slipped into the thing in the 2700 page bill. i think the gop should focus on blocking that and say we have to revisit the whole debate on health care and not just focus on specific cuts, but get to something larger. most americans are very real doubts about this health care bill. and i think the republican should use the lever of these budget talks to get to that so we don't get focused on just a small number out of $3.7 trillion. let's focus on the big thing which is health care and 16% of our economy. >> host: in the short term, because congress has to pass something, in the short term, your advice
