mr. boehner incapable of securing enough support for the plan, and do you think it is likely to pass today? >> well, martin, many weeks ago, speaker of the house john boehner called for an adult moment, and last night we saw them heading in the exact opposite direction. this is a time, as the president said, for responsible compromise, and instead of reaching out across the aisle, what he is doing is to catering to the far right tea party extreme of his own party, and went from a bill that is already, you know, uncompromising to one that is even worse. >> so are you calling him a child? >> well, i'm saying he was headed in the wrong direction by his own -- he has not met his own call for the adult moment at this particular point in time. we hope we get to that point quickly. unfortunately, because house republicans refuse to come up with the sensible compromise, we are going to have to ask harry reid and mitch mcconnell to see what they can iron out. >> i wanted to ask you that, because hasn't speaker boehner's decision to amend the plan so that it now includes a balanced budget amendment

mr. boehner? right away, both camps are just going at it. politics and get the economist point of view without all that silliness from washington. does a seemingly constant election cycle allow politicians to level with the american people that some short-term pain will be necessary to solve all of our long-term economic problems? >> i don't know if it's the election cycle, per se. people who watch this every day blame the congressional districts that have taken the competition out of the election process for the house. you've got ideology being elected over pragmatism and moderate. that means you're not getting a lot of compromise, a lot of discussion going on. and that really does divide things. that's where the people who i know watch the politics really blame the problem. that's not going to stop. both sides have been very guilty of this. whoever is governor decides which district dos what. you look at these districts, they look like snakes. you can't even figure out what a district is anymore. then you get snakes elected, too. on the ot

mr. boehner is crafting yet another bill with deeper cuts. where does this stand for the republicans? and one other point that i find very interesting is that they are making the rounds to conservative media, trying to gin up support to get enough of these tea partyers on board. they're going to hannity, they're going to limbaugh, they're going to some conservative magazines and whatnot. what does this say about where they are right now? >> i think they're in tremendous disarray. you just saw michele bachmann saying no way would she ever vote for a change in the debt limit. and i think that's where most of the tea party, the new republicans stand. in which case boehner will not be able to get this done and that brings us to, well, what do we do now? if we can't get a bill throughout house that has any chance of actually solving this problem. and i must say the president has put forth a very balanced plan. some of that four point trillion is actually what we've been demanding, which is, let's raise some taxes, get our money back from the oil companies, and make those wall street barons

mr. boehner says he has done his job. has he done his job? >> not at all. in fact, what they have said is unless you agree to their approach of the reducing the deficit they will prevent the united states from paying the bills with the terrible economic consequences and what is the proposal they have made? they want to inshrine in the constitution of the united states an amendment to make it easier to cut social security than it is to cut corporate tax loopholes. if you want to cut a corporate tax loophole, you need 2/3 vote, and they put it in the constitution, and medicare, a majority vote, so the american people do not want to put into the founding document this bias in favor of cutting education, slashing medicare which is part of the republican house plan, protecting special interest tax loopholes. it is outrageous what they are proposing and very few people have paid attention to what they are trying to insert into the constitution of the united states. >> and finally, if i could ask briefly, do you think that the conflict will be resolved by the dead
