mr. bush: tell you what i hear. a lot of people are sick and tired of the bitterness in washington, d.c. and therefore they don't want any part of politics. they look at washington and see people pointing fingers and casting blame and saying one thing and doing another. there's a lot of young folks saying, you know, why do i want to be involved with this mess? and what i think needs to happen in order to encourage the young to become involved is to shoot straight, is to set aside the partisan differences, and set an agenda that will make sense. medicare, i know you talked about it, but medicare is relevant for all of us, young and old alike. we better get it right now. tax reform is relevant for old and young alike. i don't think it's the issues that turn kids off. i think it's the tone. i think it's the attitude. i think it's a cynicism in washington and it doesn't have to be that way. before i decided to run, i had to resolve two issues in my mind. one, could our family endure all this busin

bush. mr. meacham: it was the only bust of george h.w. bush. e: what are the challenges of doing a biography of a living person? mr. meacham: distance, obviously. most, the overall fascinating aspect was i wondered how much i missed in books i have written where i have not known the person. i have never had dinner with thomas jefferson. i have never had dinner with andrew jackson. georget had dinner with bush. i would try to write what he was like as a literary matter and i would know what i was missing. and that raised the literary bar rather higher than i would have expected. so it seems to me, if you spend time with someone, you are able to judge what you have written and your conclusions by a different standard than what you have gotten out of the papers or the archives. and so, to me that was a surprise. i expected it to be somewhat easier frankly as a literary matter. go have lunch. write it up. how hard can that be? well, it turns out that is pretty hard. if you're literary skills are not firing on all pistons at that particular moment, y

so, i couldn'ted to consult with mr. bush , vice-president bush all that time, and then into his next presidential run. the biggest challenge for me, was that he didn't like rehearsing. he thought it was unmainly to rehearse and i had to convince him that power people i had worked for had rehearsed and he had needed to. >> in fact, the wednesday night of the convention he gave a terrific speech and that helped him get on the ticket. he said i didn't know the guy could speak that well. >> the american people, regardless of party want a winner in the white house after four years of jimmy carter,. >> we have -- [cheers] . >> we have such a winner, and his name is ronald reagan. [cheers] . >> but every once in awhile, he would lapse into not rehearsing, and i have to tell you the best speech in the world, if delivered badly is a bad speech. sometimes a bad speech delivered very well is a good speech. so, delivery is a bottom line for me when i work with client. one of the things i do, i deliver the speech to them before i let the
