i think to that point, mrs. bush, laura bush, had been one of the primary focuses of his initiatives, which was childhood education and that's why she was down on capitol hill. and his demeanor changed. he was still the same person personally, but his demeanor obviously changed and he had a purposeful look in his eyes when he returned that evening and continued to. steve: as you reflect on for lack of a better phrase, the sights and sounds around the white house, what you heard or did hear into the afternoon through the early evening, what do you remember? gary walters: i remember early on, the chaos. people running, screaming. i never heard anybody yell, get out of the white house. that was kind of an anathema to me. and people running. i didn't see until later that evening, the photographs that were being taken of everybody evacuating the white house on the north side. i saw the few people that were with me on the south grounds and the few people we haldane told -- the few people we told to get out. i had called im

i think that mr. bush is such a nice thing. i thought, whoa, what debate did i watch? one of the dangers for hillary clinton in this is she might be well prepared, might have more knowledge, but she comes across to the audience as somewhat arrogant, elitist. i think you said elitist. >> it's interesting. right now these candidates are on two separate train traction. they keep going past each other. what a debate does is it puts them on the same track and they're coming right at them. the first debate is going to be extremely ugly. i think each candidate can learn from the other one. for example, trump could learn to be more policy driven. she could learn to be funnier. i don't know if that's going to happen. but the thing we're not talking about is the real debate. pence versus kaine. we're talking about trump versus hillary, but more interesting than that, more exciting, it's pence versus kaine. do you know which one is pence, which one is kaine? there they are. this is like a tennis match -- >> which one's greg. >> -- between kitchen appliances. this will have the ex
