mr. carmichael: it's my pleasure to introduce this morning caroline janney. she is the director at the university of virginia and holds the john now professorship in american civil war. she just started this fall. a big deal for the civil war field because the center at the university of virginia is one of the most important institutions in promoting scholarly work as well as reaching out to general audiences. i am happy for carrie and happy for our profession to know she is at home there. she has written a number of books and edited some as well. i will give you the highlights from her most recent book called "remembering the civil war: reunion and the limits of reconciliation" published by the university of north calendar press. her first book is "burying the dead". also published by the university of north carolina. she has received awards including award for remembering the civil war. she is now working on the demobilization of confederate armies after appomattox. in her spare time, she is also editor of the civil war america which is published by the uni
