for welcoming me here to your first day of school. i'm of course here with your superintendent. mr. carranza, thank you. we caught a couple of school board members and school officials and teachers representative here as well. mr. mendoza on our school board emily goshawk as well. and we have of course a number of school districts rep. as well as parents. all the parents are here today. [applause] >> well, first of all welcome. welcome some of you back to school. welcome some of you who have just started here at james jim and school. we love our students. you are happy, yes? well, i hope you are because we got a lot of great things this year. i think we believe we have a new classroom in fact. i have been working hard over the summer with hydra and a company called salesforce and they are here today, salesforce does a lot of great engineering in san francisco and they do something called the cloud. how many people know what the cloud is? anybody know what the club is? you will learn. you'll learn a little bit. some of the teachers know that for sure they can explain to you. but, this company

mr. carranza to set the stage for us. >> thank you, i would like to welcome everybody to this special meeting of the board of education of the san francisco unified school district. i can't help but being giddy tonight. i'm so excited about our agenda this evening. not that i'm not excited about every board meeting agenda, but i'm particularly excited about this evening's agenda. many folks who are watching and the public, this is a long time that has been coming and building momentum and at this time we have the opportunity of san franciscans and specifically as san francisco unified school district members to lead in nutrition addition. i want to share if you were to right now use a search engine and search the westbound for some of the destination cities for food, for food easy, san francisco would pop to the top of the list in pretty much every search engine. the question that is begged is if san francisco is a destination food city, why shouldn't san francisco's public schools be a destination food district? >> there is irrefutable evidence that links student achievement and healthy fooc

mr. carranza. thank you, president norton and good evening everyone and i i have a few thoughts that i would like to share with everyone and listening in the public. last week we were honored to welcome our students back to the classrooms for learning, for the 2013, 14 school year. and i'm very happy to report that the students came back and you can hear the excitement in the air on the students that i visited that day. >> i did have the pleasure of visiting the sites on open day and i could not have been more pleased with the teaching and learning that was happening on the first day. i joined with the parents and children at gratan elementary and i saw so many signs that encourages the students to mroer including a garden to see how the water system works and an interactive computer, and ecology theme and tents inside of a classroom. and i also had the opportunity to be at the middle school where i saw the students in math classes using ipads. to supplement their learning and the ipads in their ha

mr. carranza, distinguished commissioners, board and administrators, parents and community of san francisco, i greet you in spirit of education and i also greet you in the spirit of our young men. we had an opportunity this past spring to engage in an historic event, not just because this was 50 years after the march on washington or 150 years hence the emancipation of proclamation, but we were able to take 14 middle school students and also three high school students, two from this district and one from oakland whose dad literally contacted me and said, please, can you include my young man on this opportunity. i said, absolutely. and what we did was we ventured from here to atlanta, georgia where we were not only able to attend the baccalaureate service at morehouse. very visited the campus. we also toured atlanta. but i think a moment i don't think any one of our young men or chaperones will forget is that we were able to witness our second term president barack obama give the commencement address at morehouse college. and, so, i want to say what not only that meant to these young men, bu

mr. superintendent carranza. >> thank you, president norton, and you haven't lost that rolling of the rs, very good. so, good evening, everyone. i have some extended thoughts this evening to kickoff the school year. but needless to say, i and the rest of the staff are very excited for the start of the new school year. a few weeks ago we welcomed back our administrators and this week we welcome all of our teachers back to educating our students and collaborating with their colleagues in preparation for a great school year. we are not starting the school year with a lot of -- we're starting the school year with a lot of strong systems in place to support our students and teachers and we have multi-tiered system of support so that our schools know what it means to have support from a central perspective and our teachers who have the greatest need are getting the modethv services in those communities that have the greatest needs. as the year progresses, we will share more and more information and more details about just how our approach is rolling out. we also have a refreshed strategic plan
