chabot and jim solar demonstrated why he was well named. nbc bay area news. >> jim solar. perfect. >> i know. perfect name. we should call rob mayeda mr.e. >> that's a weather person's name, jim solar -- we like that. the something part is, yes, we could maybe see the aurora borealis further south. the problem is around the bay area, typically clouds get in the way. let's look at both. first, what we might see tonight if the aurora gets this far south. those are high-energy particles as you heard. and as they interact with atoms in the upper atmosphere, if it hits an oxygen atom, it glows green like a neon tube. if it hits nitrogen atoms, it glows red. a lot of the aurora pictures that you see across the arctic circle, greens and reds, i don't think we'll see a display like that this far south. the bay area might see red on the north horizon. the bigger impact, though, will be perhaps to satellites and radio communications, dropouts or blackouts are possible as this all rolls in, 11:00 our time tonight. that was the latest check from the space weather center watching these high-energy particles headed our way. very likely as far south.
