. >> mr. chair, thank you very much and to you and ranking member of menendez and all of the members of the committee thank you for the opportunity to be here today and i appreciate everything you've done to make this hearing possible it is truly the owner of a lifetime to appear before this committee was president elect biden's nominee to be secretary of state and it's an honor that carries special significance for me for two reasons. first, as you've noted i have the privilege of serving as the democratic staff director of the committee for six years working alongside distinguished senators including several still on the committee today to advance american diplomacy and safeguard the interests of the american people. that experience gave me an abiding respect for this committee, for its finest bipartisan traditions, for the caliber of its members and staff, for the essential work it does to strengthen u.s. leadership around the world. if i have the honor of being confirmed, those lessons that i le

wyden: thank you mr. chair. in december, we passed a bill for schools to reopen, the paycheck protection program for a second round, it also included billions of dollars for the vaccine which i think certainly we need to invest even more. the package that has been presented to us focuses on some priorities that i think will hurt our economy as it would improve our economy. one in particular is raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour. one thing that even the congressional budget office recognizes is that by increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour, it could shatter 3.7 million jobs on the high and. the last thing this economy needs as we attempt to recover is a loss of 1.3-3.7 million jobs. in addition to that, it would increase the cost of doing businesses significantly. it would certainly devastate the opportunity to develop new jobs in rural america and rural south carolina as well as for those minorities and women coming into the workforce, it would have a disproportionate impact on those folks that you s
