mr. coulibaly.e and went down in a blaze of gunfire against police as he tried to get out of it. his course his path to that supermarket is now being backtracked by the officials here. about 48 hours ago they took into custody 12 people from his neighborhood and around his neighborhood where he grew up suspected of being accomplices of some sort. they have now released three of those people. three women. eight men and one woman are still being held and they will be held another 48 hours as police question them trying to figure out what their role is. there are at least two suspects left dna traces on weapons and in the car that was used by coulibaly. it is unclear exactly what the connections may be between all these people, but police are investigating that further. it's all part of this effort to try to figure out where this homegrown terror came from and what to do about it. and we have heard a lot of discussion a lot of debate the last few days about what france can do to better handle this prob

mr. coulibaly is certainly known, was in prison. is this something that shouldn't have gotten past the authorities in france? >> well it certainly raises eyebrows that you have an individual who only serves 18 months for a terrorism offense. the french authorities have surveillance on him. but this is part of the soft underbelly of a free society. you can't lock somebody up for longer just because you have a very good inclination. the laws are what they are in france. i think that any time this happens, there's this idea that somehow we could have perfect security if we did something differently, if there was some difference in either the law or the procedure. but quite honestly, the attacks are going to happen. it's cyclical in nature. we can point to similar attacks like this in the past. and i think what you see here is just the tactics and procedures of the french police particularly the counterassault teams like the gign who are a big differentiator between what could have been more of a mass casualty attack. >> you have one of

mr. amedy coulibaly who was in the store today who killed hostages. at one point he was safe enough to meet the president of france nicolas sarkozy to talk about youth unemployment. that is pretty incredible? >> erin exactly. but the problem is the french need to catch him committing a crime, either abroad or locally. otherwise what do you do? they have french passports. you can't expel them. and they don't have enough personnel to watch all of them. it is an enormous amount of effort to watch a dozen people. so if you are dealing with tens of thousands of diseffected muslims in france the french don't have enough police to deal with it and these people slipped through. and some mistakes will have been made but we have the same problems. and mind you, the french police are very very good. they very efficient. and when they recognize a problem, they know how to deal with it. >> and we've heard that again and again and how skilled at counter terrorism they are and eavesdropping and listening in. they have been lauded around the world for that. and how d

mr. o'keefe, thanks for being with us. when you read the reports about these men, the kouachi brothers and amedy coulibaly and what they did and how they might have gotten radicalized, what goes through your mind? >> well the radicalization of individuals, be it fascist, communist or present day radical islam, there's plenty of research that describes that whole process. the seminal work was done by eric hofer written about 40 years ago, called true believers. it's a magnificent piece that profiles and captures the personalities and events and situations that might lead individuals to radicalization. again, this is a global phenomenona for folks radicalized within their various nations and country. the real crux here i admire tremendously what you said earlier in this hour that the french people have decided they're not going to let anyone hijack their freedom of speech. i think we're at a very critical point right now where islam itself the muslim world has to say, we are not going to allow radical islam to hijack our beautiful faith of 1300 years. and to take that a step further, if one wants to understand where this int

mr. attorney general thanks for joining us this morning. we've heard about this concern, aqap still a lethal threat. >> good morning. >> good morning, and we also have this new video out this morning where coulibaly, one of the gunmen, appears to be pledging allegiance to isis. what more do we know about which group may have been behind this attack? >> well, at this point we don't have any credible information that would allow us to make a determination as to which organization was responsible. i think it's clear that both organizations pose a threat to the united states, as well as to its allies. >> is there any evidence that any other sleeper cells have actually been activated? >> again, i don't think that we have any information that would indicate certainly with regard to the homeland that there is any ongoing threat or any threat that was activated by what we see so tragically here in france. with regard to sleeper cells here in france, that is an investigation that's ongoing and being conducted by our french allies. >> and the french have said that if they can determine who is behind this, they will retaliate. will the united states join in that retaliation? >> we'll certainly have to see e
