mr. ed lee. i've been knowing mr. ed lee longer than anybody that's been talking about him. i knew him years before he got into politics. i knew him when he was -- came -- jesse jackson flew into town. he and maple tang was with the rainbow coalition. at that time i was the executive director of the way pac area project committee, which is the most powerful black organization in the united states. it was the first p.a.c. that fought against the urban renewal and justice herman. and ironically i'm reading in the paper today, there is some real estate guy and talk about having fake news, al term tiff news, talk about a real estate guy that wants to try to rename justin herman after ed lee. now i respect ed lee. but o to the hell to the no because the stories haven't come out about ed lee yet. not one black official except for london b who i call queen b and willie brown had anything to say good or bad about ed lee. but i am giving respect until they bury the man because i know his kids to talk about the real ed lee that knows me, a.c.e. i'm here basically to this agency, i ver

mr. president. i remember when you first received your appointment. and you're very approachable, outgoing person. and like ed lee. that doesn't mean that you are a pushover. you know, i've seen over the years how efficient you are at your job. and hopefully i brought my 2-year-old for a couple of weeks ago. [please stand by] it is possible that we will have four different mayors as part of this process if this thing is approved in june, right? so i'm not sure how that affects this process, but it needs to be stated. i think you need to anticipate that that may be -- how that affects you, you need to understand that. our current mayor is also a former fire commissioner, as i understand it, so there's also that that i wanted to put out there as a possibility. one of the things that i want to understand because i don't like being put in the position every year to where the mayor is coming to understand -- whoever the mayor is is coming to us and saying hey, we want a reduction of staff and then, along with the police department, these life safety departments with probably the most department -- most important depar

mr. mayor. i will miss you very much. >> clerk: supervisor safai? >> councillor safai: i will reiterate a lot of the things said. i had the great pleasure of working for ed lee when he was director of public works. and really got to see his commitment to our city. he was dedicated in such a way, as many of you have said here, to keeping his head down and doing the work. he wasn't about recognition. he wasn't about the accolades. he was truly about getting the work done. and from all the politicians that i work with in my life and have been around, i have to say, believe, truly, that he was probably the most kind, gentle man that happened to be a politician. as many of you know, he didn't go into the situation looking for that, but actually took on that responsibility and embraced it ultimately. i think he was committed to everyday san franciscans and i have so many stories to share, but two of them are kind of funny. one was, after i won my race, he called me up and said, let's go clean some streets? what? i just became supervisor. that was his reflex. his reflex was, let's get out on the streets and talk with the people and when we got out there, you know,
