mr. roger goodell was receiving a salary to years ago of $44 million, and last year's salary of $35 million million in compensation where people are looking at this league that does not seem to be directed very well, and they have made a lot of missteps in the domestic violence area. so the media kind of jumped on this and said that the nfl is tax exempt. that was a mischaracterization. not everybody in the media did it, but many media sources said the nfl is tax exempt. that is a mischaracterization of the facts. there are 32 teams in the nfl. each one is subject to taxes like every other corporation in the united states will stop some of them are very very profitable, and they do pay corporate and income tax. tax exempt is the league office the office that coordinates the activities of the league and promotes the business of professional football. and fundamentally it is a pass-through organization. the fact that they were tax-exempt, they had a status of 501(c)6, which is one of the tax exempt categories and the irs code, the fact that they were tax-exempt meant very little because the c

goodell is tight with the owner of the pats mr. kraft. how do up see it plays out? ke. not to mention goodell is paid by robert kraft and the 31 other owners. there's that. the one thing, harold henderson associated and affiliated with the league heard cases in the past before. one thing that stood out to me brooke a couple hours before the announcement of the appeal by the nfl p.a. the patriots hired a boston attorney to come in and -- and release a rebuttal to the wells report and all that was in the wells report and a couple things jumped out. they're digging into the science involved in deflategate, with the deflation of the footballs and also justifying the communications the increase in communications between tom brady and jim mcnally and john jastremski. there, just days after the afc title game. looking like those are a couple big points that will come from tom brady and his camp in this appeals process. >> all right. rachel nichols, you mentioned you know the attorney has had success in you know other suspensions. i mean, this is the same person who represen

also vowing to call roger goodell as a witness to answer questions about how his discipline was handled and what may have been a sting operation to implicate the patriots and mr. brady. >> dan abrams is here. goodell, witness and judge. surprised? >> yeah. technically, under the nfl constitution, roger goodell is allowed and empowered to hear these sorts of appeals. typically, you would expect the commission to hear this kind of appeal. in this case with this amount of controversy, and because he's been under fire for so long now, i would have expected that he would have wanted an objective person to hear it. so what? if someone else comes in and says they got it wrong on deflating footballs, what's the big deal? this is not a particularly sensitive topic. it's not related to racism or sexism or something like that. so if he gets repudiated as he has in the past for example in the ray rice case by an objective neutral arbitrator who cares? >>en unusually detailed appeal? >> very. procedural, saying the executive vice president of the nfl didn't have the power to issue this punishment. number two, the punishment doesn't fit the crime. it should have been fair

mr. kraft is too chummy with roger goodell.hink that all of that plays out in a way that will hold them accountable, or is this like a slight slap on the hand and they're going to move on? >> look i think when it comes to the patriots and what the world thinks of them, i think opinion was sort of set in stone a long time ago. i think the vast majority of fans out there outside of new england with the spy-gate thing now eight years ago decided this was sort of an outlaw organization. fans in new england obviously going to have -- a completely different take on that. by the other thing, you mentioned the supposed chumminess between kraft and goodell. and kraft has been a model owner in terms of what he's done for the league. i do wonder though if that sense played into goodell's decision to come down in my view so hard on the patriots here, sort of prove that his chumminess wasn't making him go soft on the patriots. we'll see if they can get that knocked down. four game for brady. a pretty big deal. >> all right. terrance, look.
