hahn: thank you, mr. speaker. we've been to this place before. before the gut-churning horror and sadness of the killings at the elementary school in newtown, there was a movie theater in aurora. a college campus in virginia. a high school in columbine. on friday i couldn't stop thinking about my own grandson who's 6 and a fist grader at a school in colorado. how much grief is enough? i think this grief is enough. we need to reinstate the assault weapon ban. we need to ban high-capacity clips. we need more thorough background checks and we need to offer more mental health services. but a life taken with a handgun is no less of a tragedy. a mother does not suffer less knowing that her child's life was extinguished with a gun that did not have a 30-round clip. guns kill people. they need to be a lot harder to buy. we need to do a lot more to get them off our streets. this is our time, colleagues. this is our time. we need to pass bold, necessary, overdue gun control legislation. if we do not, this will happen again. mr. baca: thank you, mr. speaker

hahn: thank you, mr. speaker. we face looming problems, not the least of which is a crushing middle class tax hikes f we fail to act middle class americans could see their tax bill rise by more than $3,000. while there will be much to disagree on in the coming negotiations, no one wants this to happen. attacks hike of this size on the middle class would be a terrible burden on families who are just beginning to recover from this great recession. with congressional approval at an all-time low, we cannot pass up this opportunity to prove to the american people that we can work together. president obama's legislation to extend the middle class tax cut has already been passed by the senate and now depends on us. we should embrace this opportunity to vote on something we can agree on and bring this legislation to the floor. i have already signed this petition. i urge all my colleagues to come down to the house floor right now even sign this discharge petition, bring this to the floor, let's give the american people a r

i'm pleased to recognize this hahn, generally from california. >> thank you. good morning, mr.chairman, members of the committee. thank you for allowing me to participate in this hearing today. i've only been in congress about a year and a half, but my whole life i've been deeply involved in transportation issues, particularly in my capacity in the los angeles city council for 10 years. so my dad who was in l.a. county supervisor for 40 years in l.a. county took my brother and i to the world fair to the 1960, which was held in seattle. many of you probably were born then. so there was this modern monorail project to ferry people around the world fair in the investors of the project at the time offered to build a monorail system is a pilot program in los angeles, traversing the harbor freeway. dad thought it was a good idea but couldn't get any of the other city fathers are county fathers to agree that this is a good investment. nobody at that time so if you ever get people out of their beloved cars. so that monorail now circles disneyland's magic kingdom in anaheim consummately
