here now is the new chairman of the house financial services committee, mr. jeffsley, republican from texas. mr. chairman, welcome back. i think bernanke is going to defend his policies to the hill, and what i'm very interested is in how is your attitude? this will be your first new real committee ben bernanke experience. will you tangle with him? do you disagree with his easy moneys? >> i'm not sure i would use the word "tangle." i have the greatest am of respect for chairman bernanke. but whether we're on qe-3 or qe-33 or qe-infinity, i feel that the marginal benefit of a policy is almost negligible. the risk of incredibly high inflation or possibly bringing us in to a next recession. possibly bernanke could prove to be chairman houdini and unwind this at exactly the right time. but i have doubts. to get economic growth, it's not a monetary policy challenge we have today. it has everything to do with too many taxes, dumb regulation, vilifying success in washington, and lots of uncertainty about the national debt. >> all right. i know you're right, but he's going

. >> i want to bring in jeff toobin, don't go away, mr. tillotson. jeff toobin is our senior legal analyst. this is fascinating. because i mean you have been in probably a lot of settlement rooms, you have to sign off, this thing is closed for good. i am never going back. i can't go back. here's your money, i never want to see you again. that was sort of the essence of this settlement, too. how can you now revisit it? >> well, if it was procured by fraud, if -- the argument is here that armstrong procured this settlement by engaging in fraud, fraudulent conduct, specifically lying about whether he used these drugs, a court could reopen the settlement. but it's by no means certain that mr. tillotson will win the lawsuit even though lance armstrong is a very unsympathetic defendant. >> jeff toobin -- lance armstrong's lawyer said this, i have to quote it, because he doesn't give a lot of interviews, and there aren't a lot of quotes we can actually read from. no athlete has ever gone back and paid back his compensation. some were suspended, but nobody sa

mr. obama's budget director. alabama senator jeff sessions leading the fight against lew says he also lied when he said the 2012 budget would not add to the nation's debt. the administration defends lew's claim that the president's budget would not add to the debt. saying it's accurate if you don't count the interest on the debt. republicans didn't buy that argument then and they're not buying it now. democratic senator robert menendez of new jersey is firing back at claims that he engaged in parties with prostitutes during trips to the dominican republic. just before election day this past november, a conservative online publication cited three unidentified sources who claimed menendez flew on private planes to the caribbean and had sex parties with prostitutes during the trips. menendez tells c-n-n those claims are all false. buddy can find them nobody ever met them nobody ever talked to him. all of those accusations are absolutely false. also menendez is also under fire for waiting so long to pay back the charges for using a donor

jeff: president obama remains in south florida this weekend. and today he played a round of golf with the biggest name in the sport tiger woods. woods who traditionally avoided politics played with mr. obama. u.s. trade representative ron kirk and democratic donor and golf course answerer jim crane. with the president on the course and a congress on a recess the clock is ticking for a deadline for automatic budget cuts. the cuts known as the sequestration would eliminate more than $85 billion in spending this year. half from defense half from domestic programs. the cuts take effect march 1st unless a compromise can be reached. bill plante joins us from washington with more on that bill, good evening. >> good evening, jeff. you know now that most of official washington does believe that those spending cuts are going to happen at the beginning of march politicians of both parties are putting more effort as fixing blame for the cuts than avoiding them. the new white house chief of staff said the president is dedicated to preventing the cuts but that republicans aren't cooperating. >> what our friends in the house have told us is that they will not even consider anything that includes-

i guess this was written by jeff poor, reporter for "the daily caller." i just quoted mr. cudlow. he explained why president obama's nomination of jack lew as timothy geithner's replacement to head the treasury department was a -- quote -- "nutty appointment." if you keep up with business issues and stuff, you'll see mr. cudlow on the tv regularly, and he, like a lot of our commentators, enjoys stirring the pot sometimes, but as i said, he was a chief economist at bear stearns and at the office of management and budget and an economist at the federal reserve. he knows a great deal about the economy. he called this a nutty appointment. mr. cudlow pointed out, pointed to lew as the problem as why we don't have a budget. he said he is part of the problem. he cited lew's lack of qualifications as another reason that president obama's appointment was -- quote -- "completely irresponsible." close quote. mr. cudlow went on to say this -- "you know, this whole thing is kind of centered around the senate which hasn't done a budget in 1,351 days. today is the 1,400th day, i would add. i con
