mr. jones: thank you, mr. president. mr. president, before i get into the substance of what i want to talk about, i want to take my own personal opportunity to remember those that we lost 18 years ago today. as everyone else, i remember the events, home with my family and young children, not knowing what was going to happen and seeing, seeing things happen. and i can remember on the way to taking one of my kids to day care when the second tower collapsed, the radio announcer just simply saying they're both gone, and just the emptiness that we felt. we remember today. we honor today. and we honor not only those that we lost, but we honor those responders that were there and that still suffer the pain from having to deal with all of that. so thank you for that indulgence, mr. president. mr. president, i do rise today almost a year ago since i first came to the senate floor to discuss the state of our nation's historically black colleges and universities and other minority-serving institutions. as i did then and many times sinc

mr. jones: thank you. thank you, i appreciate your comment, the senator for alabama. that's exactly how i like to be recognized. so thank you very much, mr. president. mr. president, i rise today to appeal to my colleagues to support the renewal of vital funding for historically black colleges and universities and all minority-serving institutions. i have risen in this body on more than one occasion to talk about the importance of hbcu's and minority-serving institutions. alabama is home to 14hbcu's, more than any state in the country. they are part of the fabric of our economy in alabama, a part of the fabric of our society. they are the pride of their communities, and they're the pride of those folks who went there and had relatives to go there and even those individuals who are not alums or relatives of alums. our hbcu's are a source of enduring pride in our state and across this country. they serve an incredibly important function. they educate those from underserved communities more than any college or university. and it is important that we continue to fund them

mr. jones is red flagged. then he goes online or goes to a gun show and buys a gun without a background check. so the red flag doesn't work unless we tighten the loopholes, close the loopholes on the background check law. later today, republican leaders will meet with president trump to talk about the congressional agenda this fall. gun violence, according to the reports i've read, is expected to be a topic of the conversation. i strongly urge my republican colleagues to prevail on the president to support universal background checks. leader mcconnell has said he will bring a bill to the floor if it has the presidents support. that means there is a truly historic opportunity for president trump to lead his party towards sensible gun safety laws that in the past republicans in obeisance to the n.r.a. have refused to support for decades. public support, public pressure is mounting from one end of the country to the other. 93% of americans support background checks. the majority of republicans, the vast majority,
