mr. lapierre is correct on this. let me say this, john, this is really a national security issue.isn't a gun control issue. let me explain why. the fbi has about a thousand ongoing investigations. john brennan told the intelligence committee on thursday in open hearing that isiv actively pursuing operations to commit attacks in the west and bring people in to western countries, whether it's through immigration, whether it's any other way. fact of the matter is that is well-known that terrorist can come into this country, they do not -- they are not on the list which is the database of ten situations where you can deny gun. they're not there, there for buy a gun legally in this country. what this legislation does is give the attorney general the authority that if there is reasonable suspicious that the person when they do the background check, potential terrorist, the gun sale can be denied. it also has an appeal process, an administrative appeal process as well as a legal process. >> dickerson: so that, in this case mateen wasn't on any list when the purchase was made. >> omar mat

mr. speaker, not the person. this is bigger than wayne lapierre, and you know that. this is about detroit's murder el salvador. chicago, people suffer from ptsd more so than those in iraq. this is about american children being four times more likely to be killed by a gun than canadian children. seven times more likely than an israeli children. and 65 times more likely than british children. this is about hidea pendleton and avery, the kids off the block. this is about 300 chicagoans killed this year alone. this is about aurora, charleston, sandy hook, orlando, columbine, ben wilson, gabby giffords and countless americans who had their lives destroyed too soon. every day in america mothers second guess letting their children play on sidewalks. and movie gallons goers plot the best escape route out of the theater. students are walking into schools with metal detectors to begin their day. it's horrific. every day in america we navigate the threat of gun violence. the second amendment was not meant to inspire fear living in america. what we've had is allow wayne lapierre and the n.r.a. not live the american dream.

mr. speaker, because they actually used to support universal background checks at gun shows. may 27, 1999, wayne lapierre, the current president of the national rifle association, testified before the house about one month before columbine in which 12 high school students and one teacher were murdered and he said this and i quote. we think it's reasonable to provide mandatory instant background checks for every sale at every gun show. no loopholes anywhere for anyone, and that is a direct quote from wayne lai pmbings ierre from the national rifle association. when did they change? when it became politically expedient to do the job of the gun industry. and so unfortunately they flipped their position and they no longer support expanded background checks and they've worked to prohibit that action here in congress. and so i will say, mr. speaker, to speaker rirne -- ryan, to my republican colleagues, enough already. we are tired. we are done. it is past time for the congress to listen to the american public instead of to the national rifle association, to listen to the overwhelming number of democrats and r
