mr. larson just did a few minutes ago and call on congress to stick around before too long and poke at that for a day. i think it's fair to say and i think the congressman would concede the point that democrats and republicans alike have known this was coming for a long time. have known that they all want to go home in early october and spend a full month campaigning. mr. larson has just as many members that are eager for that extra time on the campaign trail as the republicans. >> mitt romney, meantime, making hay of another issue and that is the flap for taking god out of the platform at the dnc. let's listen. >> i will not take god out of the name of our platform. i will not take god off our coins. and i will not take god out of my heart. >> if the last election is a guide about independent and late deciding voters, they do tend to be more conservative, middle of the road to conservative. they tend to be white, middle class. is this a smart move on his part? >> i suspect that move is more about motivating the republican base. what you saw was the democratic base was very fired up. i thin

mr. larson. mr. larson: i thank the gentleman from illinois, mr. lipinski, for organizing this hour and i concur with my colleagues that an hour is not nearly enough to highlight the virtues and certainly the public service of our distinguished colleague, jerry costello. jerry, as already been said, and his lovely wife, georgia, their beautiful family. we're all very happy and proud that he will be joined with them in whatever endeavor he does. we know he will bring the kind of energy, the kind of commitment and the kind of integrity that he's brought to the floor of the house. . a historian has written a significant history about the house. and in his book, he talks about the character of the people that serve here. i'm proud to say that i have had the opportunity to serve with someone who is so genuine and cares deeply about this institution. his home state of illinois and the people he has served with. he does it the old-fashioned way , the lipinski way, with a handshake and commitment and always looking you directly in the eye. as don young fro

mr. larson, you grew up as one of seven brothers and sisters in public housing. >> correct. >> how do youmney's assessment of half the population as feckless free loaders who can barely brush their teeth? >> well, you know, what i think mitt romney doesn't understand is that this is personal. he's talking about my mother here. an 87-year-old woman who is in a nursing home currently. he's talking about my dad who was a firefighter. both who paid into social security and medicare, both who paid income taxes. my dad never lived long enough, martin, to collect either his pension or his social security or medicare but my mom did, and everything he put in is paid forward to take care of her care. i walk down the hallways of the home that she's in now because she requires 24 hour care. she's had three congestive heart failures, multiple sclerosis for more than 40 years and now with the onset of dementia needs that attention all the time. she's no burden. she never has been. we love her with all of our hearts. she's been an inspiration and so have all the people that mitt romney demeans. he doesn

mr. larson: thank you, mr. speaker. one of my constituents wrote very emphatically, how could congress possibly leave when they know that we, the people, face the deep, dark abyss of uncertainty. uncertainty about our unemployment, uncertainty about the jobs that we need, the uncertainty that comes when your mortgage is under water, the uncertainty that comes when you know you have to educate your children, and yet congress leaves without addressing the basic needs of the people that we're porn sworn to serve. for the last week, we've heard an awful lot about work requirements. the primary work requirement that should be asked is of this united states congress, for it to stay and do the work of the people. there is a jobs bill that's out there. there is a tax cuts that -- that can be achieved. let's stay and do that work. thank you, mr. speaker. the speaker pro tempore: the gentleman's time has expired. for what purpose does the gentleman from indiana rise? >> to address the house for one minute and revise and extend my
