mr. papadopoulos lied to the fbi during t during the -- during the investigation and the memo filed in advance of the sentencing made it clear this was a consequential lie and it impacted in a negative way the ongoing investigation of the mueller team. the one thing that i found curious was that the prosecutors when they filed the answering memorandum didn't ask for a particular sentence. they simply asked for a sentence of incarceration. and he was facing up to six months in jail and not surprisingly his defense team asked for no time in jail. so i do think that the judge was sort of left a little bit adrift to decide what is the appropriate sentence. so i'm sure it was a calculated decision by mueller's team and i'm sure they had good reasons for it. but i think that is why the judge was left to try to decide, okay, i'm going to go with 14 days and -- now that doesn't seem like a hugely consequential sentence for everybody except mr. papadopoulos. nobody wants to spend even 14 days in jail. i do think it strikes an appropriate balance when you lie to the fbi as part of a federal investigatio
