i want to thank again mr. mayor, president chiu for the early vision and leadership in this program and sfmta and city administrator's office, who's been a pleasure to work with operationally. we're very excited about the launch of this pilot program for a number of reasons, not the recent of which raises profile of car sharing. one of the aspects is making it more visible in the community with the very prime locations and congested neighborhoods and also makes it more accessible for people because many of our what we call pods, which are where cars are located or private garages or public garages and they're not as visible to the community. in these dense neighborhoods, car sharing does a couple things. number one, it puts people into a shared diesel experience and they rely more on other public forms of transportation, walking, biking, which is all to the good, more liveable and environmentally conscious city. alone last year, our members saved 40 million to 60 million pounds of co 2, which is astonishing given we

. >> so good morning and welcome mr. mayor, mr. council general. everybody. it's great to see such a great crowd here for what for us is an extremely important event. my name is ed reiskin. i'm the transportation director here in san francisco and very pleased to welcome you all here this morning for what we expect will be a very lively and productive couple of days here in san francisco. the san francisco m.t.a. is the agency that's charged with implementing the city's transit first policy, which is about getting people out of their cars and into more sustainable modes of transportation, such as bikes, such as walking and transit in our great muni system. as someone who myself gets around the city often by bike, and i do that by choice, but more importantly, i'm given the charge of our agency to get folks out oaf their cars. i can't tell you how exciting it is for me to think all of the brain power and enthusiasm for cycling that's in this room are going to spend the next two days working with us to help us figure out how we can do every -- even better. alth

[applause] >> thank you very much, mr. mayor. it's indeed to -- exciting to be here as council general of san francisco in this beautiful city, especially on a day like today. it's really great. you've been in amsterdam. in 1969 i learned and have reason for you to come back to that beautiful city soon. i'd love to work with you on a relationship between amsterdam and san francisco because there's so much in common between the two cities. and a lot of things that san francisco can learn from san francisco and the other way around. and my hope for these two days is that we will have something out of it as well and i'm sure we will have something out of it as well. and you probably will not remember amsterdam in the 1960's and the 1970's. i'm old enough to remember amsterdam in the 1970's and it was all different at that time. there was a lot of congestion, a lot of cars in town and it changed. it changed by changing the culture, changing policy and implementation of policies with hard work and i think hillie talens will show some

[laughter] >> governor, mr. mayor, lieutenant governor, and mr. speaker, it was almost 30 years ago, i believe, when somebody first said something to me about the america's cup. it was somebody related to lucy . and it was because san francisco and the san francisco yacht club was going to sponsor a team. i had no idea what they were talking about, but i was speaker, and i couldn't admit that, and i paid close attention. because you see, instantly san diego stepped up, and dennis connors and his crowd really began to make the evidence of the america's cup totally and completely a reality and to make it possible. it obviously was a great success. the state of california governor participated in that effort as well. so when mayor newsom called me and said we want to do something about making sure we get a real shot at the america's cup, and i want your involvement, i said what is it going to cost me. he said you don't worry about the cost. mark burel will pay for it. and i of course will volunteer any time mark is picking up the tab. so i became a p

the senator sid back off, mr. mayor, police officers are throwing people in jail for expired license tags. >> that licy is a longstanding one? >> a little harsh, do n think? >> first o all, it is after 30 days. its someone who has let it lapse. >> do you think they deserve to go to jail? >> we have said to our officers let's use good judgment and discretion. first of all, this is a throwback to a time when we had drug dealers driving around with on registered vehicles. it was a crime fighting tactic that was very effective. we are also talking about people who might be taking kids to school, who may have inadvertentlyverlooked that. >> i used to live in lincololn park, and now is a virtual sesasame street. >> we are telling the officers to light up. >> you are also coming under criticism from "the washington po" for a grass mowining issue. the war of the weeds. they say you have unfairly awarded a cutting contract to a higher bid be. >> i d did not -- bidder.. i did not award the contract. it came up on auction, and tha

[applause] >> thank you, adrian, mr. mayor, supervisors. the number one party of the sanfrancisco police department is a reduction in violent crime. we know we cannot do it alone and we made great gains in the debut over the last few years through our partnerships with community that we have made and continue to make. one of those partnerships with with the ambassadors that stand behind me. as the mayor said, we went through a particularly tough stretch last year where we needed some help. getting multi-ethnic embassadors speaking a total of eight languages providing a visible presence in addition to our own, the richard citizen, encouraged collaboration and informing residents, was inviable. now to find out that these in the eye of -- ambassador that have been so special to us are to become permanent is unbelievable and a tribute to those who made it happen. again, it has been a pleasure to work with the ambassadors, keeping everyone informed and safe. they were care and live here and they have a stake to make sure this is a safe neighborh
