>> so good morning and welcome mr. mayor, mr. council general. everybody. it's great to see such a great crowd here for what for us is an extremely important event. my name is ed reiskin. i'm the transportation director here in san francisco and very pleased to welcome you all here this morning for what we expect will be a very lively and productive couple of days here in san francisco. the san francisco m.t.a. is the agency that's charged with implementing the city's transit first policy, which is about getting people out of their cars and into more sustainable modes of transportation, such as bikes, such as walking and transit in our great muni system. as someone who myself gets around the city often by bike, and i do that by choice, but more importantly, i'm given the charge of our agency to get folks out oaf their cars. i can't tell you how exciting it is for me to think all of the brain power and enthusiasm for cycling that's in this room are going to spend the next two days working with us to help us figure out how we can do every -- even better. alth

[applause] >> thank you, mr. mayor. in addition to all the wonderful things that you said about mohammed's leadership and the reason why i am so confident that he is the best director for dpw right now and can leave this world-class organization is his hardworking it does the plan and work ethic, to oversee all these wonderful public works projects. he is going to oversee these projects and make sure that they, on time and under budget. and one of the things he has done is embrace innovation. he has in dpw staff that he is a monitoring that looks at the performance measures to make sure to look to the performance of these projects, and he meets weekly with his staff to make sure that, again, there on time and under budget. in addition to the discipline to these public works projects, we referred to him as mr. clean. you can probably twitter that and find mohammed nuru there. the mere mention, he is out at every neighborhood, looking to make sure garbage is picked up, griffey is removed, making sure that our neighborhood

possible in this country, that kate snow went upstate in new york state to meet the man they now call mr. mayorhad changed overnight. >> that's me. >> yes, it is. >> reporter: at just 24 years old, myrick is the youngest mayor ever elected in the city of ithaca, new york, a democrat in a liberal college town. this is his first day on the job. >> this is weird. this is my office now. >> reporter: at his swearing-in on january 1st, he certainly sounded like a mayor. >> i'm so full of hope. >> reporter: now he has to act like one. >> look mayoral. >> that's not what mayors do? >> reporter: he admits his age was an issue in the campaign. he wore out two pairs of shoes convincing voters he had enough experience for the job. >> frankly, there's nothing you can tell people that will show them that you're ready to do it. all you can do is point to what you've done already. >> reporter: done already? he's 24. but when myrick ran for mayor, he already had more government experience than most of his opponents. when he was just a junior at cornell university, he was elected to the ithaca city council. now

[applause] >> thank you, mr. mayor. it is nice for the mayor to remind us that we have a guess- 3., we need to a knowledge -- acknowledge fiona maw. she paved the way for -- >> one of the best part of my job is that i can work on things that i care about. i am on my fourth hybrid, and i am waiting to get an electric vehicle so i can save money on gas. as gas prices rise, i think the pressure is on to try to figure out how to get people around economically. i do want to thank the mayor for his leadership. he has been the head of many departments over the years and he knows how to bring people together to cut through the red tape and get things done. when advocates came to me in the community about 8631 saying that we have a problem, the problem is we don't know how we're going to be regulated as electric vehicle charging stations, if we are going to be subject to the puc and calls to sacramento every time there is a change in leadership or commissioners or ideas, or whether we can operate like a free market similar to gas stations. we worked very hard for two years, which gives cert

thank you, mr. mayor. thank you, al williams, thank you reverend. it was great to see charles r. drew here. he was a member of my mother's family. we celebrate our family reunions in the summer. they are there and iti is great to see the school year. it is my great pleasure and honor to kick off the 2012 black history month and to share some reflection about black women and american culture and history. the publication, black history bulletin, recently devoted an entire issue to the subject and in their forward, to blackmuns dollars attributed these characteristics to black woman in america. unshakable, conflating sacrifice -- on flinching sacrifice. we know about countless women from the past to the present who have lived their lives in this way. in fact, like many of you come out my political and educational and historical education started with my family. my consciousness about being black and being proud began with the luminous woman in my life will comprise my roots, my fulcrum and my foundation. my fraternal grandmother, her father was born a slave and later became an owner
