thank you for joining me, mr. mayor. want to start with an amazing stat, this is where is all began, in 2008, proposition 8 passed and that was to ban same-sex marriage in l.a. county, with 50.3% of the vote. how do you explain that? and would that happen today? >>> well just as this issue is evolved among many of our political leaders, it's an issue that's involving with the electorate as well. and i think if you were to poll l.a. county in the state today, you would see that close to 60% of i think it's 58% of californians support same-sex marriage. so i think what justice kennedy said a few minutes ago, hits it right on the head this is about families, and if we value family, we should value all families. this is about the 40,000 children whose parents are living in a committed relationship. who ought to be married if they want to. and i think what i hope the supreme court will do, is rule in a broad way, that as they have 14 times, that marriage is a fundamental right, 14 times since 1888. that marriage is a fundamen

thank you, mr. mayoropening up city hall to my colleague, supervisor cohen, and my distinguished colleagues sitting here in the front row on the board of supervisors. it's truly an honor to stand before you on such a great month. recent -- yesterday congresswoman barbara lee talked about dr. martin luther king and his dream and some of the issues that we were dealing with over 40 years ago are some of the same issues that we are dealing with today. and i'm so honored to have dr. claiborne carson here today to talk to us about some of those issues. he is unmatched in terms of his expertise about dr. king and has made sure that his dream and his words and the education that we have from dr. king stays alive for generations to come. so, this is truly an amazing event today. dr. king in 1967 asked, where do we go from here? and today we're still asking that same question. where do we go from here? well, we still have people suffering in our community, people in the african-american community. where do we go f

>> thank you, mr. mayor. let me begin saying that there has been no support that has been more consequential than the support coming from mayor bloomberg. it has been immense and it is organized, it is committed, and it is consequential. and let me start my saying that i was told in 1992 when i introduced many of these reforms that there was no way you'd ever beat the gun lobby. it's not possible. well, in 1994, we did. in 1994, reason prevailed and we passed the assault weapons ban, a limitation on the size of magazines and a number of other measures, including expanding the so-called brady bill and background checks. and one thing i want to lay to rest at the outset, they worked. they all had an positive impact on public safety. they all had a positive impact on public safety. i did an interview yesterday saying, well, the impact on each one was only this, that, or the other. i said, that's like saying we shouldn't have taken lead out of gasoline because it didn't end global warming. it had a positive impac
