supervisor mirkarimi: mr. wagoner, i am curious. if the sheriff is able to go on and bring new deputy sheriffs, and there is a range, a modification on the security potentially, could that not then begin the discussion of whatever additional staffing, how we might be able to complement the police department, sort of actions, tasks, and activities, because the question of a dollar is a dollar, it is still a savings. without detracting from their current duties that they are assigned to do. >> sure. the issue would be that it may be cheaper to perform a service with sheriff's deputies than police officers. however, unless we have an excess of sheriff's deputies, which it looks likely that we will not, we hire sheriff's deputies to perform a service to do something currently done by police officers. we are paying the salaries of the police ulcers and those going to work patrol functions or whatever they are going to do. it may be more cost-effective for that particular service to provide it with sheriff's deputies, with budgetary costs

supervisor mirkarimi: thank you, mr. president. first of all, i would like to think the department of the environment and the mayor's office for their help with this particular legislation. if you will recall, we were trying to advance legislation that had never been advanced before in san francisco, and that is to create a repository for people to take back their discarded medications, other unwanted pharmaceuticals. we gleaned from other legislatures who asked that pharmaceutical companies help shoulder the burden of the cost, so their citizens would be able to use these repositories so hazardous waste would be properly disposed of. the law was never implemented. nowhere in the united states are there laws at the state level. so, county by county, these laws are beginning to crop up at the county's expense. san mateo county actually practices the infrastructure that allows their citizens to be able to dispose of their unwanted medications and pharmaceuticals at san mateo county's expense. we want the pharmaceutical industry to sh

supervisor mirkarimi: thank you, mr. president. i'm a huge dog lover, grew up with dogs. ours passed away not that long ago and i miss him. i hope one day we can introduce our son to a dog and so he grows up with the same joy that i did when i grew up throughout my life. i appreciate very much supervisor wiener's gestures and resolution and most likely will support that, but i think not to discount what supervisor elsbernd has put out there. i want there to be strong consideration of what the message supervisor elsbernd has shared with us not to go unnoticed. it is not just about the relationship with the national park service has applies to this question of whether they are pulling rank in a way that we find intrusive and that we want to resist. the total quality that i think has ensued in response to the national park service, such as the earlier version of this resolution, is something that had me quite concerned as well. we are working closely with them on ocean beach. the whole reason we are going through a complete master plan process in ocean beach was stimulated b
