mr. mulvaney. welcome back to "meet the press." it looks like we lost our satellite connection with mr. mulvaney. let me bring in today's panel we have with us. kasie hunt our chief white house correspondent. and the former north carolinaic governor, ileana johnson of politico. this is one of those mornings. lot of breaking news and moving parts here. kasie hunt, capitol hill, the immediate response here politically has been extraordinarily uneven. democrats believing there is an easy way to explain what's going on here as cory booker said it's time to speak with moral clarity. and really only george pete bush being the lone republican out there calling this what it is. >> one thing we have to consider here is republicans fundamentally lack diversity it on capitol hill and here in the capitol and when you consider what the el paso shooter wrote about heading into this and you consider george p. bush, his mother, hispanic american. he is somebodyb w who has a dee understanding of that community and clearly was personally identified in that document that shooter called out. you don't reall

mr. mulvaney. i understand the president's been briefed on both of these shootings. what can you tell us about what more he has learned? >> jon, i talked to the president obviously yesterday at some length after the shooting in el paso and very early this morning again on the tragedy at dayton. you know, he's a human being and i think his reaction is the same as most folks watching this program which was he's a combination of saddened by this and he's angry about it. the first call, he talked to the governor of texas yesterday. he's talked to the governor of ohio this morning. i'll tell you the first call he made yesterday was to the attorney general to find out what we could do to prevent this type of thing from happening, what we could do to send a message to the sick people who would do this kind of stuff that this is not appropriate. this is way beyond the pale. these are sick people. we need to figure out what we can do to make sure this doesn't happen again. >> we see 20 killed in el paso and we just heard from the mayor of dayton that the death toll there has

mr. mulvaney. >> that's a total cop-out. it's a total cop-out. what does anybody think is going to happen when you have a president that is laughing off the idea of shooting immigrants who are coming across the border like he did in florida a couple of months ago, and what do you think is going to happen when you have a president that basks in chants of send her back that will not readily condemn the white supremacists that marched in charlottesville in 2018? he's fanning the flames of this, and we can always hope that the president will find, you know, something within him to change what he's doing and unfortunately i don't think that's going to happen, and frankly i do believe, though, that the vast majority of americans don't think like this, and hope that they will take it into their own hands to make sure that they live out their own lives and values of respect for others and compassion and understanding the differences like a lot of americans already do. but also that they hold all politicians to that standard. whatever that politician is r

. >> you had mick mulvaney saying an ambivalent mr. had to be persuaded throughout the day thursday that ms. westerhout, who was on vacation in california, needed to resign, which she did that night. >> staffers need to have a reputation of not leaking the madeleine has had access to the goings-on more than thibanybody else. the fact that thus far she didn't have a history leaking would have gone a long way to help earn her trust by the president. the irony here, though, it's unlikely that anyone would have written a story based on statements she made to the press if they hadn't fired her. if the white house had kept madeleine on, it's likely what she told those reporters in an off-the-record context and that was shared in the gossip chain would have stayed in the d.c. gossip chain and it wouldn't have been reported in a story. in this case the overreaction, or what appears to be an overreaction, resulted in more negative publicity for the trump family than might have happened otherwise. >> in terms of the overreaction, what about the

mr. president, if we achieve everything we achieve in this meeting, tiger woods is going to want to be me. [applause] chief mulvaney: that is the kind of person that you get working for you when donald trump is the president of the united states. there are literally thousands of men and women doing what you would do if you were there to fix this government every day, and you will never hear of a single one of them. i have 1500 pauls working for me. the only reason they are there is because donald trump is president. the only way they will be able to continue to do things for the next six years is if we can reelect donald trump as president. that, for me, is motivation to come out on a friday night and talk you folks. [applause] chief mulvaney: how do we know it is working? we talk a lot about numbers, gdp growth and job growth and household income. they are numbers, right? numbers don't tell a story. franklin's says -- he says we talk about numbers too much. i said frank, you are right, with one exception. i have one number that tells a story. it is my favorite number. the one i ask for every single week, show me t

mr. trump seemed to think maybe he had talked too mch. my favorite part is mulvaneyy i don't know why we need to have another press conference. before his last encounter with journalists and mulvaney replied you wear them down after a mi while. every day it was the same version of the story. trump offers contradictory singles. at the end of a g-7 meeting trump changes his tone on china and iran. it's whiplash for the rest of the world. the numbness is also hitting us in the press because how many different ways do you frame what is essentially the same story? >> absolutely. one of the reasons it's also difficult to write about this is because the president has not consistently displayed a deeply held conviction when it comes to foreign policy so sometimes it really does see like he's flying at the seat of his pants. >> because maybe he is. >> because maybe he is. we don't know him to be someone who has spoken intelligently and deeply about having a world view that goes beyond his golf course abroad. when he has to actually talk about issues and be on a stage where he
