mr. newsom, you are going to go to hell if you do not take care of the poor and the sick." everything you are doing, every minute of what you are doing right now is what it is about in life, and that is giving back, especially to the sick and the four. this man got it. he got into office, and he worked day and night in an area that is extremely unpopular to the wealthy people that give you contributions. the bottom line is it is very difficult. you can admit it. you are lieutenant governor now. we are statewide. there's a bottom line. you run, and it is about the sick and the port, and you do not get a lot of people sending you checks, but he kept with it, and he understands it probably better than any elected official in the united states of america, and now, we are lucky enough to have him on the state level so he carries the ball forward. newsom. >> thank you. newly elected so i've got to now call him mr. president. thank you, president brooks. i want to thank the commissioners for being here and of course our director, susan leyall, recognize her extraordinary leadership in putting this to the. as they say, god's delays are not god's denials. we should have been here a decade ago. i had the great privilege of just getting back a couple days ago from the world's economic forum in suite err land. it was an extraordinary experience for the first time in the 3 or 4 years that i've been here, there was no snow up in the alps. it was completely green as if we were there in the summertime and what a back drop for a discussion about global climate change. in stark contrast to just a couple years ago when there were just a few panels like this on the topic. now, overwhelmingly, the consensus is we have got a crisis of extraordinary proportions and we need leadership not just to identify the obvious, but to act locally. indeed, that's the spirit of this conference. it's one thing to talk about ideals; it's another to manifest them. w

mr. li, was not looking for this job or asking for this appointment. in fact, he only considered it after hearing from so many people, including people allied with mayor newsom and mayor newsom himself. i think it is disappointing that someone of his stature and of his level of accomplishment was put through that. i have always said that i am open and have been open to edwin lee to serve in his role. i'm someone who, at some point, approached him about considering this option. i am very confident of his qualifications. i know that he has a long record of public service. the problem i have with where we are is not the person that we are talking about, but the process that has been followed, and how we have gotten here. part of the problem with this process is that it took a 6-5 vote, and thank you, supervisor maxwell, to provide some of us on this board the opportunity to actually ask mr lee some of the basic questions you want to ask someone being considered for this job. that has been very helpful. mr. lee has called me. we have spoken twice. i want to thank him for his willingness to do that. i know that he may have spoken to other members of the board. i
