mr. romney? >> good luck tonight. >> no, really. >> really. megyn: before norah o'donnellhat question another reporter suggested president obama was doing well with his reelection efforts. in 1980 poll.taken around this time of year showed president jimmy carter would easily win reelection against a gop candidate considered a sure loser. ronald reagan. didn't turn out that way. michael reagan is the late president's son and chairman of the reagan group. they didn't think your dad would win it was january 1980. jimmy carter 63% in the hypothetical matchup. and ronald reagan 32%. 63% to 32% and we know how that ended. are people counting out mitt romney, other candidates on the gop side a little too soon? >> what you in fact for wishing for with jimmy carder is wishing for ronald reagan in 1983. he was an actor, governor much california with hollywood, i can easily beat this guy and it was a landslide 50% to 40% in notch of that year. but you might also remember during that process we were going through a rough primary. four or five different candidates vying for the nominat

o'donnell at gingrich headquarters in atlanta. kelly, the campaign there must be confident in their chances in mr. gingrich's home state of georgia. >> they absolutely are and confidence has been in short supply since south carolina. so, the gingrich people feel very good about it. it is his home state. rachel, one of the things i think that is most striking about newt gingrich today as a candidate is that he is not able to vote for himself. of course, he represented georgia for 20 years in this state, brought a lot of national attention here, but no longer lives here, he lives in virginia, where his name is not on the ballot, and he and his wife opted not to vote for one of the other candidateses but instead to abstain. that is really a perception and just the mechanics of being a candidate extraordinary, that he won't ever vote for himself for president. now, in terms of the campaign, part of what they believe very strongly is that a southern strategy is essential for any eventual republican nominee. so, they believe that winning georgia, maybe having a good performance elsewhere, would be very

mr. bonapart about this. i imagine we'll get together tomorrow to understand what the thought process is between him and chief lee. >> and eugene o'donnell, what we know about the investigation so far, i mean, it's fairly routine to come upon and fascinating you as a former police officer know these things as well and one of the elements in one of the police reports that suggests to the police they interpreted this as a possibility that there was some kind of occupation is the notion that zimmerman's shirt was wet in the back and had grass stains in the back and maybe a bloody nose but that was not in the first police report so it's starting to become a suspicious element in the case. why did this stuff that would be part of the self-defense come into it later? >> it's entirely possible that the responding officers for whatever reason didn't the confidence that the people have in the justice situation, if you add up some of these issues, both the affirmative issues of evidence and also the apparent misleading statements that it's a clear if it goes in that direction the tremendous amount of deliberations maybe in the defense that the law
