mr. overton's story in austin, growing up here, he was an austin legend.the road from here in 1906. lived his whole life in austin, went to serve our country in world war ii, came back and lived out of the spotlight, worked for the state of texas for many, many years, retired in 1985, and then began to get on the radar of everyone around the country about five years ago when he attended a service in washington, d.c. honoring african-american veterans from world war ii. it was a life well lived. >>> six years before the titanic sank and nearly a decade before world war i began. >> 1906. >> reporter: richard overton was born in bastrop county. when overton was 35 years old -- >> yesterday, december 7, 1941, a date which will live in infamy. >> reporter: the japanese attacked pearl harbor, throwing the united states into world war ii. overton enlisted nine months later. he joined an all-black military unit in 1942. becoming a skilled sharp shooter. overton rose to the rank of corporal, serving in places like pearl harbor, okinawa, and ee woe j iwojima where h

[video clip] thetrive to be worthy of sacrifices you have made. at we owe all of our veterans. that is what we owe veterans like richard overton, who served in the army in world war ii [applause] [applause] >i want you to know a little something about mr. overton. he was there at pearl harbor when the battleships were still smoldering. he was there at okinawa. he was there at iwo jima where he said i only got out of there by the grace of god. when the war ended, richard headed home to texas to a nation bitterly divided by race and his service on the battlefield was not always matched by the respect that he deserved at home, but this veteran held his head high. he carried on i lived his life with honor and dignity. he built his wife a house with his own two hands. he went back to work in the furniture business. in time, he served as a courier in state capitol where he worked for four governors and made more friends than most of us do in a lifetime. richard still lives in the house he built all those years ago, rakes his own lawn and every sunday he

mr. speaker, i rise today to recognize john overton for his long record of his service to the state of west virginia. opting to retire, john won't be representing the people of berkley county, west virginia, for the first time in 34 years when the house of delegates convenes in charleston next month. john and i served together in the legislature for decades in the 1980's and early 1990's. i came to know john as someone who followed his conservative principles even when it wasn't in vogue. during the 34 years he served in the minority, many of those fights were lonely fights but he never swayed from his staunch, unwavering commitment to conservative principles. after the 2014 election, the republicans took the majority in west virginia legislature for the first time in 84 years and his conservative values helped dictate a new agenda. he chaired the industry and labor committee, served as speaker pro tempore. i wish the best to john and his wife jo ann as he retires from his legislative service. serving as a citizen legislator can be a thankless task. the people of west virginia owe him a deb
