mr. pillsbury. -- george h.w. bush administration. president trump has called you the leading authority on china. what is your background? guest: i was born in california, that is why i am naturally friendly. i went to stanford and got a phd from columbia university, and was sent to study chinese were a couple of years. in those days, everyone thought that was insane. that china was poor, backward, angry, and seen as the cause of the vietnam war. there is a secretary of state when i was an undergraduate that said we are fighting in vietnam because a billion chinese will be coming south into the rice bowl of asia, so why not study chinese, is what i thought. this is the great enemy of our time. everything changed beginning with president nixon and pushed further by president h w bush. now we are shifting back towards seeing china as wary. knowing mandarin chinese and having this expensive education has been helpful. i'm no longer thought of as being completely insane. host: would you describe china as the great enemy today? not.: certa

mr. pillsbury. i was speaking with congressman cole about this earlier. china and the u.s.e different time frames when it comes to the negotiation. michael: that is certainly true. jason: what does that mean -- michael: the chinese claim about 5000 years of history. 3000 is recorded, written history. we claim 240 years. have are 250th year of the revolution coming up. in china you are taught to think in terms of hundreds of years. jason: what do you make of the current posture? i want to ask you specifically about this notion that we can separate out the huawei issue, which is on the minds of a lot of investors, from the trade negotiations. do you buy that? michael: i do. she is being accused of financial fraud and crimes. she has due process. the canadian judge will discuss her bail. he has several options. you can let her go back to china or take her passport. the only shocked that is going on is investors are not used to the idea of enforcement of these kind of agreements against the chinese. i supported this all along. we cut china special breaks. they were our partners

mr. michael -- pillsbury.e getting word the american ambassador to china has been sum manned to beijing by the chinese government in regards to the detention of the huawei executive. are we running into some trouble here in terms of trade talks in your view? >> i don't think it chinese will connect the arrest of miss wan with krai -- with trade talks. critics are saying i weren't go to china, they might take a hostage. there is a similar article in the canadian press. canadian businessmen should avoid travel to china. they have made concessions to the president already in the past two weeks. i think we are on the right track. trish: i had a guest say to me the other night that it's possible if donald trump is successful here he may be able to do with china what president reagan was able to do swoaft yet union and dismantle the current chinese structure as it exists. >> i don't think that's president trump's goal. i think he laid out in a book he wrote 18 years ago. it's called "the america we deserve." it has
