mr. pistorius has been paying the family a sum of money. and it's essentially giving the family an opportunity to put their side across and convey the imperatives they were under, from their perspective. >> and very emotional all of that. it was the first time we saw june steve camenkamp, first tim saw her breakdown at one moment. >> it's surprising, they spent so long cross-examining the defense witnesses on pedantic points, knowing that he had this witness coming on to the stand because what could possibly be more powerful, and leave more an impression in the mind of the court in testimony that we heard yesterday and will continue to hear this morning. >> let's go back to some of the cross-examination that nel has been doing. i mean, the probation officer who recommended three years correctional services, which many people think is far too lenient and some say shockingly inappropriate. she was trying to distinguish between the letter of the law, and what happens in reality. >> he certainly was very focused on conveying to the court just h

mr. pistorius shot through the locked bathroom door thinking he was defending himself. mr. orius' girl friend, sleeping next to him was not in the bed, apparently that did not concern mr. pistorius also there was testimony that a they had been fighting and woman heard scream before and during the shot. nevertheless, mr. pistorius was found not guilty of premeditated murder by a judge saying he only committed gross negligence. then the judge imposed an unbelievably lenient sentence. joining us from miami is judge ferrera. am i making any mistakes in my summation, judge? >> no, bill, you pretty much summed it up well. i think he claimed that he didn't know she left the bed. >> how could you not know she had left the bed? >> he said that the room was so dark that he didn't notice it but he also didn't make any attempts to notify his girlfriend that there was a burglar in the house. i really didn't buy his version and frankly i would have been likely to convict him of murder either premeditated or non-premeditated murder. >> in my opinion, what the defense attorneys put forth wa

mr. pistorius please rise. the following is what i consider to be a sentence that is fair and just both to society and to the accused. count one, culpable homicide, the sentence imposed is the xim imprisonment of five years. >> okay. so what does all that mean? well, it meant that very soon after the judge left, moments after she made those comments, oscar pistorius was led down the stairs behind the dark stairs that lead to the cells here at the courtroom. he didn't have a long lingering good-bye to his family. he looked one or two in the eye, and quietly, just disappeared down those stairs. no obvious reaction from reeva steenkamp's family. i must say, in fact all of us in court were quite quiet there was a sense of an anti-climax in many ways. legally, what does all this mean? we hear from kelly phelps, our legal analyst. that he could just serve a section of that five-year sentence, which could mean he's out after ten months, but that's very much at the discretion of authorities here. >> this sounds like a
