mr. pollack is right about that history, you know, after september 11, there was major policy change andw those victims families as a key voice for reform. congressional leaders did not address them by saying it was too early to work on the problem or it was, quote, only a time to grieve, as we're sometimes told. now as for the reality down in florida, legislators there just halted a debate on a bill to ban assault rifles rebuffing those parkland students and parents. my next guest is an advocate for gun control, virginia house member chris gilchrist, his girlfriend was tragically murdered in 2015, it was a horrific incident because it was captured on live tv, the shooter using a 9 millimeter pistol and then turning it on himself. an nra-backed candidate that was just three months ago and he joins me now. thank you for being here tonight. >> thank you for having me, ari. >> what are you thinking when you see this type of incident playing out one more time yet again. and what do you bring to it as someone who's clearly devoting, i believe your career right now to being part of reform? >>

mr. pollack stood up and talked about the fact that he had three sons there and he would have to visit his daughter at the cemetery from now on, it was just extraordinary. and the fact that he is expressing his anger understandable anger in the white house with the president listening. it is amazing. it is a moment frankly i think for the history books. and i do believe that as much as sort of intellectually all of us who have covered these horrible events over and over again have seen the call for doing something and then for that to subside quickly, so intaintake augustly in my gut, and maybe i'm just being overly optimistic because i feel like we all need to be, this does feel i also think that it's interesting that the president who was invited to cnn's town hall tonight declined to come but then had his own. and it was obviously a very powerful event to have that free flow of discussion not in a vitriolic way, in a very important productive, constructive way inside the walls of the white house, with cameras there. >> and this is a president who wants to be seen as a man of action. he
