[applause] we have for many years raised thorough bred horses and when she and her husband remained active in a variety of civic causes. you have heard some ring of luci baines johnson of her sensitivity as well as her sense of history. unlike peggy luci was a young woman when she entered the white house unexpectedly in november of 1963. she wanted nothing more than to be a normal teenager. life in the white house is many things but normal it is not read luci's mother said as much when she gave her daughter the following sage advice, don't ever do anything you don't want printed on the front page of the paper. [laughter] this would strike terror in the hearts of most teenage girls but luci rose to the occasion ever more impressively than the time overnight and 66 wedding. according to one newswoman at the time nobody was invited except the immediate country. [laughter] and notwithstanding a press controversy over a nonunion bridal gown

mr. richards, mr. jeffries, we're beneficiary but part prisoner to our background our own experience.prosecutors may not have the benefit of a judicial view like judge poe had or what cedric described growing up is something i would not have experienced growing up so i think it is a good idea for us to the extent we can rely upon the experiences of other people well intentioned people and there are a lot of issues raised. all of which are important. the issue that i hope we can have another committee hearing on, at some point and i think hakeem mr. jeffries, you touched upon it that the failure to cooperate on that end impacts the prosecution of police officers who have done wrong. i saw the failure to cooperate in the faces of moms and dads who were trying to get justice for their murdered young people because other witnesses would not cooperate. so i think we all want a justice system that is respected, in fact, we have to have a justice system that is respected or we're not going to make it. so i hope this is the first of many hearings and, again, on behalf of mr. conyers and all t

[applause] richard smith: we have time for one more. >> this is for mrs. brigham.'m a retired schoolteacher. i have adjectives for most of my first ladies, like mrs. johnson, i think your mother was brilliant, gracious. mrs. reagan, tenacious courageous. i wonder if you could encapsulate your mother for us. peggy: i think you want my grandmother. i never knew her before the white house. and there was a set of adjectives for her then. she was very gracious, very diplomatic. she was very well organized. but there was a sort of a sadness that came after the white house. after the white house, i can remember being with her and in those days, one didn't have car heaters. you have car robes. i would be sitting in the back of the car with her and i was suddenly realize she was doing this. something always moving, her phone was always going up and down. -- her foot was always going up and down. having to be still, she had a backup everybody. it was a very poignant letter she wrote on the train coming back from washington. to her two sons. i have the letter. never once did

mr. richard braddock lead the department. in an effort to provide greater focus to our efforts i have laid out a plan for achieving many necessary management activities over the next several months. i will be focused on developing the necessary relationships with the department stakeholders to be the most effective chief that i can be. i plan to enhance communications with our workforce and ensure the most efficient utilization of overtime. i plan to continue training for onboard sworn personnel for the remainder of fy 2015. i plan to complete promotions for ranks of deputy chief, inspector and captain and continue to enhance the promotional process for ranks of lieutenant and sergeant which will be administered in late 2015 or early 2016. i will oversee the deployment of the department's new strategic plan in the coming weeks which will provide greater focus for the uscp's efforts and allow our workforce to more clearly understand their role in achieving our mission responsibilities. finally, i plan to continue to work with

on case number 10-sf-0604, people versus richard edward ruiz. mr. ruiz is richard edward ruiz jr. your true name? >> yes. >> the following day it's preliminary court hearing ruiz was charged with felony possession of narcotics which could carry a lengthy sentence behind bars. he entered a plea of not guilty and had one supporter at the hearing, his girlfriend, samantha dunn, who spoke to us afterwards. >> tell me how you found out that your boyfriend was in jail. >> he was supposed to pick me up from work one day and after work i was waiting outside and an hour had passed and he wasn't there and i knew something was wrong. and so when i got home i found out on the internet that he was arrested. >> what are your biggest fears for him right now? >> i'm just afraid that he's in isolation, just completely -- you know, scared and lonely and doesn't know what's going to happen. and on top of that, i'm afraid of how long he's going to be in jail. that's my biggest fear so far. and that it would change him in any way. i hope it doesn't change his heart. >> i didn't know my girlfriend was

mr. dunn: we were all in it together. richard is a good example of that. the kemper family. jim kemper was cavalry. mr. matheny: he fought his way to manila and in the process, he got the heart. 10 days before d-day, his older brother, david, was killed on a reconnaissance mission in italy. that fountain in downtown kansas city is a memorial to david. that is a good example of how everybody in the country, we were all in the war. and the people that stayed at home, we kind of felt sorry for them. because they were going to miss out on things. but it was a unanimous will to win. host: we will have to leave on that note. i want to thank the kansas city public library and the leadership who make there's one of the finest library system in the country, especially for public programs.
