mr. ryan: good morning. right now more americans die every year from drug overdoses than they do in car accidents. let me say that again. we have got more of our fellow citizens dying every year from drug overdoses than they die of car accidents. today the house continues to work on legislation to address the heroin and opioid epidemic across this country. for those of who you were at our press conference yesterday, you heard from susan brooks and bob dold, authors of two of these initiatives, all told by the end of this week we are acting on 18 bills to deal with this. i'll be signing one of them today. it is s. 32, the transnational drug trafficking act. this allows prosecutors to go after drug traffickers in foreign countries if we believe their drugs will make it to our shores. so that is going to the president's desk today. the one reason we call this an epidemic is because it cuts across all demographics. it affects families everywhere in america. take athletes. athletes get injured and

if the election were today, mr. ryan would be voting for mr. trump.s the speaker working with the next president he wants to have an ongoing dialogue and narrative which starts today. it's starting about ten weeks sooner than people thought it would based on the convention or even june 7 in california. so this is a natural first step, especially given the deliberative nature of paul ryan. how he makes his decisions. he does not rush to decisions. but i'm convinced certainly he will be behind mr. trump with energy. but given the nature of your meeting yesterday, what was paul ryan's main concern with donald trump? what did he express as something he says, donald trump has to clarify this to me. >> none of that came out. the encouraging thing was we knew mr. ryan and mr. trump are worlds apart on trade. mr. ryan is supportive of the trans-pacific partnership. myself, others are very much opposed to it, including mr. trump. and mr. ryan was very clear. that was an issue mr. trump ran on. he has won our nomination. and that's going to be a difference in o

mr. ryan: i want to start with something that's on the minds of american americans, long linals at the airports. people i represent spend far more time at airports than they would like to. this is unacceptable. yesterday the homeland security committee held a hearing with the t.s.a. administrator. that was a chance to get some answers for the public and to better figure out how we can be better prepared. but there are things that we can do about this problem right now. precheck lanes process twice the number of passengers. this also enhances security because we're pushing more known and trusted passengers through these lanes. so we have passed this precheck bill in the house. and i hope that the senate will act soon, especially ahead of the busy summer travel. ok. i want to talk about the vote we just had on the energy and water appropriations bill. when i became speaker, one of the commitments i made to our members and to the american people was to open up this process. that means having more

ryan. what does mr. trump wanting to get out of it? >> what he really needs to do, tyler, is to unite his party. you cannot win in modern american politics unless you have your party overwhelmingly behind you. donald trump has not done that so far. he's got active resistance from people like paul ryan, from mitt romney, who is today ratcheted up his pressure on income tax returns. so donald trump needs to smooth things over, get the entire party on the same page for reasons of turnout and for reasons of simply calming the waters before that convention this summer. >> that's what he wants to get out of it. what about the congressional leaders, what do they hope to achieve? >> their goal is pretty singular. they want to hold their majorities. the senate republican majority, they have 54 seats, is in big danger. there's seven republican incumbent senators in states that president obama carried twice. the house has a more secure majority, but if there's a big defeat for donald trump, that would mean trouble for that majority. democrats nee

mr. ryan isn't the only republican to say so. two former presidents, george h.w. bush and george w. bush, have also rejected trump senator lindsey graham, and a number of senior evangelical conservatives. yet, other republicans, like john mccain, who mr. trump once strongly are now supporting the businessman and some say even president obama might happy mr. trump is the g.o.p. nominee. after all, mr. trump is seen as more likely than his defeated challenger, ted cruz, to legacy. mr. obama's question, is the g.o.p. imploding? pat: no, it's not, john, it's in the process of coming together. let's talk about ryan. a terrible mistake. won, trump went out there, ten million votes, swept all the primaries and caucuses and he's nominee and he says i'm not sure i'll endorse him and they call for this meeting and what is ryan is ino effect holding donald trump up to make concession about his positions which trump is not going to do and ryan is catg to have to walk this back and so i think, i mean, ryan, in the meeting this week, almost pathetic coming out and he's going to have to move back

mr. ryan: this election is too important to go in at half strength. we need a real unification of our party. after a tough primary, that's going to take some effort. we are committed to putting that effort in. i want to be a part of that unifying process so that we're at full strength this fall, so that we can win this election. we cannot afford to keep the liberal obama agenda going. we have to be at full strength so we can win this election and that is why we have to go through the actual effort and process of unifying. reporter: you've been very vocal on your differences of policy with donald trump. what do you need to hear from him at some point to fully endorse him? is there a situation -- mr. ryan: these are conversations we're going to have. i don't really know him. i met him once in person in 2012, we had a very good conversation in march on the phone. we just need to get to know each other. we as a leadership team are enjoying the fact that we have

the reporters waiting for mr. ryan to come out. think holds the upper hand in this unity meeting? is it speaker ryan? >> i think that they both need each other. it is usually beneficial for them to get along. i tell you why, stuart. what the republican party needs is donald trump to do well on the ticket here and they are defending 24 senate seats. they need donald trump to do well at the top of the ticket. donald trump needs the republican party. he needs her help with fundraising. data and analytics. he also does not want members of congress running for reelection to be actively working against him in key congressional districts. they say that would trump at the top of the ticket, that is a real problem with republicans running for reelection in the senate or the house. this down ballot stock that you talk about. democrats say that trump is bad for down ballot races. do you agree with that? >> no, i don't. you look at the latest polls. the democratic party. you look at ohio. donald trump up in that state he had he leads on the is

mr. ryan: thank you, mr. speaker. this week we're going to take up a package of bills that i support dealing with the massive heroin epidemic plaguing places like ohio, but all over the country. in my congressional district, we saw a few months back over 22 overdoses in trummable county alone, seven detects, in summit county, city of akron, 56 people died of a heroin overdose. compared to just 40 in 2013. and now in ohio, these drug overdoses have been the leading cause of accidental deaths in our state, bypassing car accidents. this house this week is going to do the responsible thing and pass key legislation and hopefully combine with the senate legislation. but there's a missing piece on the recovery side that we need to make sure that as we address this issue, it is comprehensive, it is about addiction, it is about treatment, but it also must be about recovery. so i commend my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for these important pieces of legislation that are coming forth. i will support them, but knowing tha

mr. trump. speaker ryan spoke to reporters at his weekly news briefing at the capital. speaker ryan: good afternoon -- excuse me, good morning. right now, more americans die every year from drug overdoses than they do in car accidents. let me say that again. we have got more of our fellow citizens dying every year from drug overdoses than they do of car accidents. today, the house continues to work on legislation to address the heroin and opioid epidemic across this country. for those of you who were at our press conference yesterday, you heard from susan brooks and bob dold, authors of two of these initiatives. all told, by the end of this week, we are acting on 18 bills to deal with this. i'll actually be signing one of them today, s. 32, the transnational drug trafficking act. this allows prosecutors to go after drug traffickers in foreign countries, if we believe their drugs will make it to our shores. so, that is going to the president's desk today. but one reason we call this a epidemic is because it cuts across all demographics. it affects families everywhere in

now, there were some exciting signs that republican house speaker paul ryan might lead a resistance to mr. trump becoming the uncontested head of the republican party. there were some signs that maybe there might be an effort there, there might be some actual effort there when paul ryan declined to offer his endorsement to mr. trump. that led to threats this weekend from mr. trump that he would have paul ryan removed as chairman of the republican national convention this summer. so it started to feel like there might be a fight within the republican party. maybe it's finally coming to pass. it's on, right? it's on. he says, i'm not going to support him and there's the threat to remove him. it was on, it was a fight. it's off already. paul ryan telling the milwaukee journal late this afternoon when he was asked about that threat, "he's the nominee. i'll do whatever he wants." actually, i should be clear, before he says "he's the nominee, i'll do whatever he wants," paul ryan says, i'll do whatever. i'll do whatever he says twice. do we have the sound of it? >> if you have to step down as c
