shirley. that's followed with british by mr. david cameron taking questions from the house of commons. ♪ >> this week on q&a, craig shirley discusses his book "last act" about ronald reagan's life after the presidency. craig shirley, your book is called "last act." white as you feel the need to do this book? what. of time did you write about -- what period of time did you write about? aboutirley: i wrote dickstein years after the presidency. -- his 16 years after the presidency. there's a lot of great books about the last years of presidents. william manchester of course wrote "death of a president." onone had ever done a book the reagan post presidency, and it's an idea that came from my younger son, mitchell, who was researching on a previous book i did about reagan. i had all these binders in the kitchen. his job was to highlight every time his name was mentioned. he was 11 at the time. asked, "dad, has anyone ever written a book about reagan after he was president?" that was about five years ago, and the birth of "last act."

mr. shirley. guest: the color miss a very good point. reagan inherited an economy that was negative growth. 7.5% andent was res climbing. jobs were being eliminated from the economy. also --f that, he economic textbooks say what is impossible, a shrinking economy. when the economy contracts, you go into a deflationary cycle. we had rising prices of falling jobs. he said that was impossible. on top of that, and possibly high interest rates which were 19%, 20%. you have double interest rates and unemployment rising faster. reagan was confronted with the worst economic calamity since the depression. the color was right. he brought inflation down to less than 5%. he brought interest rates down to 7.5%. much more tolerable levels. he created 19 million new jobs. office, reagan was divided for creating federal deficits, but it was falling the last two years of his presidency. ,n the supply side, tax cuts tech monetary policy, in fact, worked and created probably the greatest economic expansion in american history because 19 million jobs create

[applause] let me tell you just a little bit about them. i suspect people here already know their stories. growing up in west virginia, catherine johnson counted everything. she counted steps she counted dishes. she counted the distance to the church. by 10 years old she was in high school. graduated from college. as an african-american woman, job options were limited. she was hired as one of several female mathematicians for the agency that would become nasa. catherine calculated the flight path for america's first mission in space. that put neil armstrong on the moon.

mr. speaker, i rise today to commemorate the life and legacy of congresswoman shirley chisholm. last week she received the presidential medal of freedom, our nation's highest civilian award. congresswoman chisholm is truly deserving of this honor. in 1969 she became the first african-american woman to serve in congress. she was the first majority party african-american candidate, and the first democratic woman to run for president. she was also a founding member of the congressional black caucus. congress wovepl chisholm, or mrs. c as we called her, was my mentor and role model. the course of my life changed when i met her as a student at mills college. at that time i was a black student union president and invited her to speak. her speech focused on the power of women and people of color to change the world. as she said, if you don't have a seat at the table, bring a folding chair. she explained why it was important for everyone to get involved in policymaking process because too often the voices of women and people of color are unheard. i know that today many of us, including
