same format as with mr. tan.eak about your experience and the things you hope to work on on the entertainment commission as well. >> good afternoon. a move to san francisco in 1989. i own three bars in the castro and one along the russian river. when i got the first bar in the castro one of the first things i did was to join in the eureka valley neighborhood association. i did that because i wanted to be in this business for the long term and i felt like the long term success of the bar depended on the understanding of the neighborhood concerns and being able to proactively resolve issues before they get out of control and become huge issues. i tried hard with all the bars to make sure they are responsible members of the community and trying to do good and involve the neighborhood. so, i am also on the board right now. i helped former castro after dark which is a coalition of nighttime businesses in the castro. with castro after dark i took the lead on crime reduction issues. i do not know how many people are awa

mr. speaker. when you think about tanning services, a $2.7 billion pass-through tax to the middle class on tanning services. now, i'm not quite sure what tanning services has to do with health care, but we find ourselves in the midst of another back door tax increase on the middle class. or let's go ahead and tax the innovating companies $22 billion and pass it to the middle class. or if you don't like those taxes we have another one, health insurers. let's take $60 billion out of the pockets of the middle class by making the insurers pay more which they know they will pass it through to the middle class. but since that may not be enough, they decided that they would actually tax the health plans of the middle class $32 billion on the plans of the middle class. i just don't understand it, mr. speaker. we must not only extend this tax cut for the middle class, we must pay for it. as i was talking to one of my constituents, $650 every two weeks and she needs her $600 tax cut but she's very close to social security so she says to me, tim, please, as you provide an extension of the tax cut, please don

very dry, arid environment, and correct me if i'm wrong, where's the nearest inhab tans of yucca mountain? is it 100 miles? mr. shimkus: the city of las vegas, which is the major metropolitan area, is 100 miles from yucca mountain. what people have a hard time understanding about the nuclear test area, this is where the nuclear test site was. federal government owns numerous parcels of land around yucca mountain. the communities right outside the reservation and i think the whole test site area is like the size of new hampshire. but the communities -- what's interesting about this debate, the communities right outside the gate are fully supportive of yucca mountain being the repository for high-level nuclear waste in the state of -- and why do i know that? because i visited them, i have been in their communities, i went to the community center, they welcomed me and we talked about how this was important for the country and their local communities. >> this is critical for the cupry, the state of illinois has 13 reactors, our neighbors to the north have three commercial reactors, on two dncht site, both on lake

mr. president, thank you. i know to reach a conclusion on significant legislation that is pending, it determines many things important to americans tanned creates the opportunity for -- and it creates the opportunity for members of the senate and the house to spend a little time at home during the holiday season. and i'm reminded how blessed i am this holiday season to return home to a rural state where family values and community traditions run deep. there's no tradition more important to us than how we pass on from one generation to the next the workings on a family farm. i am worried that these rural traditions are under attack by washington, d.c., and in september our department of labor proposed new rules that would ban youth under the age of 16 from participating in what is many farm-related tasks like rounding up cattle on horseback or riding on a tractor, cleaning up stalls with a shovel or wheelbarrow. while i'm sure there are many 15 or 16-year olds happy not to do that work, it's important work and it's a way that fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, grandparents work side by side with family members. one of the things i
