mr. thompson: mr. speaker, i rise today to congratulate ryan devlin of bureaucracyway, pennsylvania, on receiving the 2013 pennsylvania teacher of the year award. ryan is the youngest educater to receive this esteemed award. his recognition also marks the second consecutive year in which the recipient is from the fifth district of pennsylvania which i'm proud to represent. in 2009 ryan completed his master's degree in education at california university of pennsylvania. the following year he was hired by the english department at bureaucracyway area school district. today he teaches british literature, creative writing, digital media and computer science and also serves as advisor to the senior high gifted program. ryan is a teacher that goes above and beyond, a characteristic he demonstrated year after year in his young career. for example, he's played an active role in introducing new technology to both students and staff, has worked to develop 21st century learning skills in a classroom environment t

mr. thompson. mr. thompson: i thank the gentleman from georgia for hosting this hour. and an opportunity to recognize and thank a good friend, jay pearson, who started his work in the u.s. house of representatives in 1978, in the office of the general clerk under then majority leader john rhodes. where he learned the intricacies of the house and legislative procedures while keeping official minutes in this chamber. in 1979 he began working in the republican cloakroom where he remained for seven years before beginning a new position as floor assistance it -- floor assistant to the republican leader in 1986. since then jay has served as floor assistant to three speakers of the house, including newt gingrich, dennis hastert and the current speaker, john boehner. the career that has spanned over 35 years, jay has served as an invaluable role for so many members in helping them to learn the ways of the u.s. house of representatives. i'm proud to be among those who have benefited from jay's service and friendship and leadership. but jay isn't just known for his expertise in

mr. thompson, for their leadership. it gives me great comfort to be able to come on the floor today and say thank you. even though no one wants to see a homeless hero, a homeless veteran, i spent over the holidays time visiting a number of our centers where homeless veterans are and i can tell you that they are the most giving and charitable persons. many of us will be able to rount on thanksgiving day or depurg -- recount on thanksgiving holiday or during the christmas holiday to be able to serve veterans who unfortunately, not of their own doing, have fallen upon hard times, do not have a place to live and are coming to the various food pantries and food kitchens. it is one of great pleasure to me, not for their condition, but to be able to humbly provide them with a warm meal. this is a commonsense legislative initiative that says to homeless heroes, every day we're thinking of you. as a ranking member on the transportation security committee, i can assure you that transportation security officers are grateful to ms.

mr. thompson, what he said and he will be a great leader on this issue. we look forward to working with him on all the efforts, because as much as the words, and there have been plenty of them over the last several days, have been important. we hope they have been somewhat soothing. as a father of three daughters, i tell you can't express anything to satisfy not just yourself but certainly not the families of the victims. and so i think it's been important that we try to commune all of the families that are victims today -- communicate to all of the families that are victims today, let them know that we stand with them. very quickly, those words must be followed by deeds. we must act and we're very much looking forward to working under the leadership of mike thompson to make sure we have our words followed by our deeds. so we have a lot to do. we are thankful that the president has said that something must be done, and we believe under his leadership and with the work of good members like mike thompson we will have our words followed by deeds. with that l
