[applause] >> i bet this is the first time you have done this before. it's going to be easy. do you want to tell us a little bit about yourself and how long you've been in d.c. and to some background on your family? >> my name is allen thompson. i've and washingtonian. i was born right down the street. i'm 65 years of age. i am living with hepatitis c, first diagnosed i think in early 90. they said i probably had longer than that. i have of the melodies. high blood pressure, degenerative arthritis, and hepatitis c. it was recommended to me by my primary care physician, because of my arthritis, and had to stay off, stay in bed for weeks at a time, that i tried to get disability insurance. so i did. of course medicaid came along with that. now, as i said, i've had other problems. i broke my leg about eight years ago, and during that time i contracted nurses, virus

mr. thompson here to discuss his book stories i tell myself where he's there -- shares the stories of his father bought over the course of 41 years. thompson is a in conversation with douglas brinkley. his books are on our shelves now. please help to welcome our guest. mr. thompson also served as the secretary of health and human services. hosted by at an event the american enterprise institute. >> we are just about ready to get started. what i think is a historic event. i'm going to tell a short anecdote. story,om, according to a was built with republicans posted gingrich. -- post-gingrich. they were going to vote on the way talent merged welfare reform bill. representative mike castle had come in with a centrist bill. at the last minute. it was quite upsetting. thatules committee decided castle could present his version first. it would be voted on and if it lost, he would support the ways and means bill. wns is veryive to agitated. he is in the back corner over there in the closet pacing back and forth with the door open. he sees castle conferring with two or three other people. he says, that is out of protocol. you can't be dealing like that. you have to be on the up and up. he goes over to check it out. he comes back to the representative in the closet and says, don't worry about it, they are talking about something

mr. thompson. i have patience who live with hepatitis c for probably 30 years and actually had a liver transplant. if you get a transplant, if you have hepatitis c going in, you get hepatitis c after transplant the it resets the clock which are still affecting your new liver. we have tried multiple medications on this person in the post a transplant setting and also to recount them into a trial and just cured after 24 weeks of treatment with the all oral regimen. to him while coaches no longer living under the spectrum of hepatitis c, what he said is, when asked how he is feeling and everything he said well, he said was the first thing is able to share a bowl of ice cream with his granddaughter without worrying about it. to him that was like a really important thing. it wasn't that we save his liver individuals. you can't get hepatitis c for sharing a bowl of ice cream, i want to stress that, but this is the thing even though we try to educate about those things, these are the things he was worked
