mr. walton, for the purpose of an opening statement. thank you, mr. chairman. enjoyed serving with you when i get all the oversight work and it's good to see you here. i take this issue very personally. in february 2009, the subcommittee held hearings on nationwide outbreaks of salmonella related illnesses linked to products from the peanut corporation of america. one of the witnesses at the hearing was peter hurley from wilsonville, oregon. when peter's 3-year-old son jake became sick, doctors recommended to give him his favorite fruit to encourage them to eat. jake's favorite food was boston brand peanut butter crackers. tragically that turned out to be the very thing placing him. when they tested the crackers, three of the six packages containing peanut butter contaminated by salmonella. jake came ill or stuart parnell, ceo of dca knew that the peanut products were contaminated with salmonella when he told the plant manager to quote, turn them loose. at the same hearing, i confronted mr. parnell and asked him whether he was willing to take the lid off and ea

[applause] and now i will go back to being a member at large. >> want to just take a point of privilege, if i may, to thank shamann for his incredible work this past year. shamann mentioned a couple of accomplishments that we've had this year, but i think it would be worth mentioning a few more that we were able to accomplish under his leadership. in 2017/'18 school year, we started off with only four vacancies in our classrooms, which was due to the development of recruitment and retention plan. and know that commissioner walton pushed really hard to be sure that our h.r. department was fully funded and supported. we'll build the first units of housing dedicated to educators in san francisco history. and, again, i know that commissioner walton led the charge on that. one of the things that i think is worth noting, that after the presiden

mr. sala salvador lopez barr. thank you. >> thank you, and study hard and get ready for finals. now, we have advisory committee report by the parent pac. >> good evening. >> good evening, commissioners, superintendent, and president walton. on back of the pac, we'd like to extend our condolences to the lee family and the city of san francisco. we're really sorry for their loss. we all acknowledge the works of the mayor, and he will be truly missed in our hearts. the role of the parent advisory council is to empower parent role and perspectives. this report provides an update on the pac's areas. in november and december, pac member rebecca page and elsie -- and program coordinator georgia williams bradford met with the ucsf coordinators fellow to gather feedback from the various stakeholders will school transportation opportunities and challenges to address. there in our initial meeting, the pac had the opportunity to share the concerns of families raised during our community conversations over the past two years about transportation and its impact on school choice tardiness, chronic absenteeism, as well as students and family engagement, and the ability to participate in after school programs and school events. it's imp

mr. haney for spearheading this resolution. thank you. >> thank you very much. that is the end of public comment. at this time i'd like to invite my colleagues to make comments. commissioner walton. >> thank you, one, i want to thank everyone who came out in support of the resolution this evening. commissioner haney and i and the rest of the colleagues have had several conversations with many organizations across the city. not just about homelessness around the city, but homelessness that affects your students and their families and what we could do to address that and so what you see here is an opportunity for the district to go above and beyond the status quo. we have programs in place to fight homelessness in schools, but this gives us an additional opportunity to do more. it will increase resources for the schools that have higher population of homelessness and the district can identify sites for affordable housing. that is something that i know is atypical of school districts. you don't typically see school districts working on affordable housing, one. definitely not working on affordable housing for homeless families and making sure we provide those opportunities, but we'r
