mrs. washington so what happens is those pits get covered over and forgotten.hey were awaiting our archaeologists to discover them and it was one of the most exciting things that we found. we also found something maybe didn't appeal to the popular media very much but for us it was pretty interesting. you see behind me what looks like a well. that's only about 3 feet deep. it's a sump and it is part of a larger drainage system that washington had installed in this new cellar probably in the 1780s. so we found trenches dug in soil, lined with brick and they all ran out to a major trunk that exited the house to the south and went down to the dong repository so it was raining any rainwater, any groundwater got into the seller and we've got a lot of water this week and if you look here you can see that this is where that rain was. it is still full of water because we've been getting rain and groundwater coming in because of all the rain so these drains don't want to function nearly 100 or i'm sorry, 250, maybe 240 years after they were constructed so that says a lot
