mr. winslow -- mr. winslow, on -- if you can use a-1.7, you showed the overhead view in terms of what you're asking of the midblock open space. can you show us a side-view? >> yeah. thanks for asking. yeah. at or below the existing structure. this one is beyond the existing structure and is kind of what we were asking for with respect to augmenting and maintaining the existing midblock open space. can you see that? >> commissioner richards: thank you. exactly what i was asking. >> president melgar: commissioner hillis? >> commissioner hillis: so thank you. o one, i like this project. i think it is a good conversion to housing. the midblock open space is -- it gets confusing back there. obviously, this is a full -- full lot building that has some full lot coverage buildings adjacent to it. there isn't this clear, defined midblock open space. i think we're trying to accommodate immediately next door to the north some additional light and air in this. but i like the project design. you've got a gracious cou

mr. winslow. i'm so tired i can't even remember your name.that is, i would like to see on drawing zero three roof terrace which comes from the bedroom which is basically right in the notch for the property line kitchen window, i would like to have the terrace held back in order to give privacy to the kitchen from the terrace. it is a small reduction in roof deck, and i think it will help everybody to maintain the kitchen not being affected by the use of the terrace. do you see what i am saying? the other question i would like to ask the commission, and it is not part of what anybody brought up, but it is part of our discussion, i believe that the house has a nice set of his terraces and open space. i believe that the roof deck behind the parapet is a little large given the adjoining building, and the light well right across. you have a tall parapet and i would prefer to see that roof deck only occupying perhaps a 12 by 13 dimensional space, like if you make a square. i would like to cut to the roof deck back in order to give more privacy to n

mr. winslow can address that in terms of residential new construction in shadow. >> as far as residentialsign review when we assess the building we do it in a cursory way in terms of looking at the building as we look at the rest of the impacts of the massing. when i say this it is without shadow studies. my understanding i think was mentioned in the hearing the project sponsor does have such shadow studies. if asked could present those now or at a later date to assess the quantitative impacts of shadow on the adjacent property. >> the shadow would have to be evaluated relative to rooms it falls on what time of the day and what time of the year. we have seen the pictures however we do not have any information as to the rooms which are being affected and the overall living arrangement on the affected properties. the question still as policy question for the rest of the commission is to really reflect on this while the substantial enlargement of the unit in a demolition situation and not providing a.d.u. which is policy discussion we addressed over and over again. i can rattle off six, eigh

mr. winslow, when you hear the d.r. other thoughts in your mind when you talk about scale? i personally i am not interested in actually lowering hides and accommodating something that i don't think will be resolved by doing that. >> if i can define the question in the form of an answer, to respond to the d.r. requester's issues, there is two things. it is the mass. you're adding three talk to 5 feet based on the proposal, but as you mentioned, it is -- it basically appears no different then the existing building because of the roof. what is thrown off, the contention of what is thrown office because you have floor plates that are different now, and so window proportions become important. what's really important in the design guidelines is that level of specificity of when, and in this context, in particular where you have extremely consistent block face character, which is defined more by the proportions of the windows, the stepping and the regularized pattern as it ascends up or descends down with the topography, the s

mr. winslow, would you mind pulling your mic -- >> instruct me on the basics, too. can i raise this up and get a little bit more -- we really were asking for a basic alignment with this building next door and this new building mass such that this space here was as open to the rest of the midblock open space as -- as possible. and it was doing no more than what the existing full lot two story building is currently doing. so our recommendation is removing the third floor of this portion, which is in excess of what's currently there to sort of open this up to the rest of the midblock open space. with respect to the roof decks, you can see the roof decks on both front and back buildings, you know, are especially in excess of this already pretty
